Suthep: Thailand is not at a disadvantage over the border dispute

BANGKOK, 26 April 2011 (NNT)-Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs Suthep Tuagsuban said it was only the opinion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to review all diplomatic ties with Cambodia while affirming that the Thai Government would uphold the JBC mechanism.

The Deputy Prime Minister assured the people that Thailand was not at a disadvantage, adding that the Thai military still provided full protection for national sovereignty. The army only retaliated when necessary while also making sure that their operation will not harm border residents nor trigger animosity in its disputing party.

Mr. Suthep insisted that both nations would achieve mutual agreements over the border issue through bilateral talks despite a presence of a third country. Thailand will need to consider whether or not it would take any action to pressure Cambodia at this point. He also expressed disbelief that Cambodian Prime Minister, Somdech Hunsen fell gravely ill as rumored.

The Supreme Court inquiry on the asset concealment case involving Pheu Thai MP Chinnicha Wongsawat is scheduled to commence on June 14 following Tuesday's ruling that the case merits the judicial review.

If convicted, Chinnicha, daughter of former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat and niece of ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, will lose her House seat from Chiang Mai and face a five-year ban from holding political office.
