Both the new Hilton and Holiday Inn, while located directly on the beach, are what I would call "urban" hotels in a beach resort environment. They are tall buildings on small land plots so there is little to no outdoor space many would want in a beach "resort" hotel. Of course, this is a function of land prices as they are new and land prices are now high so no land is wasted on stuff like, I don't know, gardens, trees, large outdoor pools, etc. For a "resort" hotel with lots of grounds filled with trees, outdoor pools, tennis courts, etc., you have to stay at the older properties that were build when land was cheap. This is not so bad because they have all been nicely refurbished over the years. These include the Dusit, Royal Cliff, and the Siam Bayview and Siam Bayshore. One exception is the newish Sheraton Resort.

The Marriott is a very good compromise as it does have extensive gardens and pools and is ideally located on the beach. It is an older property that has recently been refurbished and the grounds are beautiful. The attached shopping center provides some restos and coffee shops and being in the center of town, everything is within walking distance and public transportation.

Good if you're coming with young children or are young at heart. Not so good if want quieter more relaxed atmosphere.

Rabbit Resort

Go to the Royal Cliff, beautiful grounds e.g gardens etc, private beach, 10/11 restaurants, gym, the staff and service are second to none, away from the hustle and bustle of the the town yet near enough to be there in 5 minutes in a baht bus or as we do when we are there a pleasant walk of about 20 mins to get downtown. we have been going there for 10 years and cant fault the place, it really is worth a try.

Sheraton on Pratunmak next to the Royal Cliff...Far more plush than Rabbit Resort...I do like Rabbit but its not a full fledged resort hotel
