Pheu Thai Party Offers Tablets To Thai Students

From a discussion regarding the announcement in 2010 of the cheap Indian Sakshat tablet PC:

however, I must also add that in my experience, implementing something like this is a momentous task. my school decided to distribute laptops to every senior (12th grade) they chose the HP elite book (and claim to have spent a total of around $1100 on each one; a total of over 600 were bought) this particular computer was a POS. flimsy and slow, there was never a time when at least 2 students PER CLASS had a broken one (classes averaged under 25 students). I admit that this is in large part due to the fact that these are high school students, however, I myself had many issues both with hardware and software (and I know how to treat a computer). cheating was also rampant (eventually the school spent 30,000 to license a security software, it didn't help).

sorry for the rant. in short, decisions are made too far up in the system without consulting those who are actually required to implement them.

Now ... take that poster's rant .... and add in the factors that the "tablets" are 1/11th the price AND being given to 6 year olds .. not 17 year old kids :)

Don't be so negative, everyone.

With the standard of teaching in most Thai schools being under the zero line, it will enable the few kids who want to, to learn.

Indeed Humphrey, it would enable those who want to learn.

It would also provide the "real-time" connection to news, information, images etc that the internet has to offer to the Thai people in the remotest areas.

This kind of access to news information for everyone would be productive towards a truly democratic Thailand. Or... will it be heavily censored / monitored?

Doesn't need censored. the lack of bandwidth to international sites will soon tire them. Asked by TOT to do a bandwidth test from my home (Bangkok) to their server in Bangkok. I got a really high speed! Unbelievable almost, my phones lines should have melted at the baub rating. When I told them of my own reading to an international one, it was much less impressive. Conclusion, the authorities must think Thais only search for 5hit from based Thai websites. rant ends, back to work

My understanding is if you can access the internet you can access a relational database........you know the types used by police, major banks, goverments.....all very difficult to access I'm sure......

Your lack of knowledge in IT is really obvious.

If they are to be able to use their tablet computers outside of school to access the internet, they will need to be either in a wireless network "hotspot" (which can cost money - to use at home they'll need to set up internet access with a wireless network router, or to use at a cafe they may need to pay per hour) or have a 3G/EDGE account (which costs money, like a mobile phone contract).

Not true, if they have a laptop with WIFI capability they can set up a Ad Hoc wireless network and use their laptop as the wifi router. PM me for full details

Setting up their laptop as a wifi router does not allow them to access the internet. At home they will need an internet connection ... not necessarily with a wireless network router, but they will need a modem and need to connect to that modem in some way.

However I don't feel it is beyond the abilities of the Thai to manufacture a reasonably cheap, solid and light protective cover to be distributed with the tablet PC..........

Wont be much use anyway.

With employers having to pay graduates 15,000B per month none will be able to afford to, or want to hire a graduate as they will be able to get a non graduate who can do the work just as well for 300B a day.

Prepere to see a big hike in unemployed graduates, at least they will be able to play computer games to keep themselves occupied.

Wonder if Thaksin will set up a company to supply them?

Ah there was a statistic just the other day saying that graduates were the highest unemployed. Not sure if nationwide or just Bangkok?

SORRY but I dont understand the Taksin HATERS here....I really dont !!! hope they understand themselfs and Thai Politics

That's because you weren't here when Thaksin* was running the place. If you were, you'd hate him too.

WHAT A BULL....t maybe you will enlighten me what was different for YOU when Taksin ruled the country??? I am living since 12 years in LoS, not much change,

except more and more traffic lights for more and more stupid <deleted> on the roads...not only ThaiRambos, there are a lot of Farangs here too drive like there

is no tomorrow....

Not only the colour of the people wich fill their pockets changed....its still YELLOW

If you would weigh up the pro's and cons it didn't affect us ex pats a great deal, other than had there not been the massive corruption- and media shut your mouth tactics, quite a bit more monies would have been available for schools and hospitals, Had the man had done his job non selfishly, he could have still been at the helm. Education is the only way forward for Thailand, but not as it's taught now....................bribes of all descriptions are Thailands main downfall.

I agree with some of your points, but I would just add that he would not "still be at the helm" because, constitutionally, PM's are limited to 8 years, which would have ended several years ago.

Of course, that would only be for his premiership. He could "still be at the helm" as a non-PM, much as he is at the helm of PTP today.

And where exactly is the difference between giving one million students a new tablet, and a bribe? Every student in Thailand will try to influence the votes of their friends and families because of a TABLET, not because of their political opinion. I don't care what anyone thinks that is, but for me that's clearly a bribe. Are we now going to see the Thai students on the streets rallying for the red shirts instead of the taxi drivers?

:hit-the-fan:This is just wrong! ... but maybe they put at least a Thai - English learning software on it.... that would better many things in the land of the smile.

The whole of politics is a bribe, all politicians offer people what they want, in order to get the vote. Lower Taxes, More Law and order, better education, they are all incentives to vote for me. Name me 3 honest straight truthful politicians anywhere in the World in any age of history. I can think of just 2

Yes, true, but some 'bribes' are in fact in the inerests of developing a civil society, developing equal opportunity, etc etc., and some are clearly just manipulation of the masses purely for the benefit of immoral leeches.

He'd be better off giving them a cheap mobile phone each.

Thais are obsessed with mobile phones they can't get enough of them. I know one girl who has 2 Iphone 4's and 3 BB's!!!!

and very likely 5 farang boyfriends who bought them for her........

I forgot to mention she has an Ipad, 2 Mac laptops.

It's amazing how you guys have a one track mind and class all girls as being like that.

No, she is a friend of my wife. She is a multimillionaire and happily married. She just hasn't a clue how to use the phones.

So did she marry into the money or inherit it?

The former is done by bar-girls too. Hardly a defense.

I find 90% of this thread to be completely off the real point.

Thailand desperately needs to fix the basics of education, including but not limited to much better quality teachers, all trained in student active learning, also called project based learning, and forbidden to use rote learning, much better pay for teachers, including performance based pay increments, quality insightful educators at the top of the numerous education ministries and agencies (who are all currently lost as to the scope of their work), promotion on the basis of proven insightful capability and proven high performance, much smaller classes, much better materials, much better buildings and general facilities, and more, and when this gets some results then lets put some emphasis on learning aids.

The suggestion that computers could be the catalyst for change is rubbish.

The suggestion that they will easily get broken, lost, forgotten etc is realistic.

I and most of the lecturers and indeed some program directors at the two universities where I lecture have banned laptops in the classroom. Why? Because again and again we caught students watching: fashion channel, fashion shopping on line, korean soap operas, Thai soap operas, Ktv, pop music channels, pornography, cartoons .....

Kind of like the folks that replaced their first car with another one when the initial purchase ran out of fuel. This type do their share and more to stimulate the economy, without too much real guidance.

An excellent idea ... IF...

1. 2 years is spent planning the implementation

2. A substantial set of curriculum materials is developed, acquired

3. Student management software is acquired

4. Sufficient WiFi nodes are in place

5. A sub net of the web is enabled with additional pages being added by individual teachers

6. Tablets are just todays CHALK ... and if used intelligently can cut school budgets and deliver better education by having fewer face to face hours with teachers who may not be so effective anyway.

A local village school (90 pupils) has a teacher pupil atio of 1:10 .... and that does not include administrators. Even has a specialist computer teacher. Those resources far exceed Australian standards. Singapore is an excellent example of what can be done - IF ... Thai implementation is effective it matters little if there is a kickback here or there - the potential educational gains are enormous.

I speak from considerable experience wherein I disavowed popular policies and used computers to DELIVER education not simply EDUCATE ABOUT COMPUTERS.

Although I doubt the motives of the politicians I disapprove of slamming every initiative simply because of some insignificant potential negative .... yes game playing can be time wasting - but the right games can deliver development of thought processes and copious content efficiently.

The prime consideration should always be outcomes which stem from delineating content and processes. Keep an open mind people.

Pretty good synopsis. I would add that the IT overhead, that some IT wannabes on this sight suggest as impossible, is not so bad at all. Robust "childproof" laptops are available from Dell right now and a tablet is easily forseeable. Games can be locked out very easily . I envision a internet connection that would direct all the tablets through an administrated "portal" allowing access to only what is administrated.... e-books, streamed lectures, and even to the point of assignemnts and courses. Has anyone on here taken an University level online elearning course using Banner or a simlar delivery method ?? Perfect example of what can be done with the tablet proposed...... This is a very good idea and could forseeably take learning outcomes in thailand to an international level if Change Management can be properly implemented. Great Idea and unlimited potential ! ! ! !

This forum has acquired the dubious reputation of generally being negative to most Thai initiatives. For once, there is an initaitive that has the potential to improve the standard of education afforded to most Thai students and to bring the Thai education system into the 21st Century. Yes, the project needs proper planning and implementation; and, if successful it might also improve the Internet infrastructure especially in rural areas. Regretably, but true to form, most posters on this thread only see the negative, not the huge potential benefits.

I think that has much more to do with the trustworthiness of the source of the initiative, and historical factors in Thailand, than the 'initiative' itself.

The only "huge potential benefits" are for the Pheu Thai Party cronies who oversee the scam. Same as it was in 2006.

I see very few posters bashing more than "dreamed up last week" connotations, the lack of details, funding, pre-planning. Plenty of other viable, and likely far more beneficial, suggestions have been put worth for how to otherwise spend the tens and tens of billions of baht this scam represents.

Bring forth all the ground-breaking pre-requisites first, and THEN speak of a tablet in every first graders backpack, eg. returning to the "cart before the horse."

I've not seen much of Thai-bashing on here nearly as much as I've seen ludicrous scam-bashing.

I was never bothered to register but congratulations, this little newsflash is so retarded I just had to do it in order to post.

I can't believe these cheap tactics, this illegally empty headed plan. It is smart (read cheap uninspiring) to get the majority of people who can't afford one to love you and vote for you but it is just a bad move. REALLY bad. Students here in general are as lazy as it gets, if they no longer need to write anything down with their God given hands the last hope of making something out of students who need a push is out the window. It'll be taxi overkill, there won't be room to walk because tuk tuks, taxis and motorbikes are battling each other for every square meter. The number of bars will have to triple in order to create career opportunities for bar girls, all plausible staff for proper companies will need to be imported, the internet will be clogged up with videos of teens doing each other in school bathrooms, crime will rise to unmatched heights due to students needing to steal a new tablet because they dropped their original one or sat on it. WHEW! It's going to be great, GO RED SHIRTS HO!!!!

Building Better Future Foundation

THE NATION

Published on November 19, 2008

The Building Better Future Foundation is seen as the latest front by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who said the new foundation and research group was tasked with stimulating development in Asia, uncovering leadership potential and helping to address the challenges of developing countries.

Seri Wongmontha, the Director of Rajabhat Suan Dusit University's doctorate programme and a marketing communications expert, said yesterday the move was designed to create a good image for Thaksin while whitewashing his bad reputation.

The virtuous work of the foundation could make good news that takes the place of bad news about him, Seri said.

Thaksin, Chairman of the foundation, wrote on its website www.buildingbetterfuture.org that the foundation, which has the Thaicom Foundation as a partner, would reveal its full board of advisers in February 2009.

The foundation is already reviewing four proposals for projects that have requested its support and several projects will be announced in the new year, the website said.

The foundation has Sam Moon as acting Executive Director.
