Mint 10 - Movin' On Up. First Install, Need Advice

Hi -

Had some virus issues on W7 Starter and here I am w/ Mint10 installed on my netbook. I used GParted and instructions from Mint forum for formatting.

First, when I am typing in this window on TV, the cursor jumps to a prior word or paragraph. This is beyond annoying. Any help here? Thus far, its only here on TV.

I need a firewall and would like anti virus, yeah I know I know about the AV. But I may reload Windoze back on another partition. Is there anything out there that will sync with my ipod?

Is KLITE available for Linux? I don't like VLC.

**OK, I find some apps I like. I DL to Downloads and then Install - how and where? I have 3 parts. boot, / and home I think...

I've updated, but a few packages failed. I did not say to ignore

I don't understand the environment at all, both the GUI, the programs/utilities.

Is there a basic site for understanding UNIX jargon? Perhaps another for UNIX/LINUX basics? I'm using the Mint site now, it's really great but much is over my head, I need to do a bit of studying.

ANY help thanks, esp the jumping cursor!!

Big thing to remember is it is not windows. That does not mean it is harder it is just different.

Most control centers have a GUI for the firewall set up and some distro have it active already. You need to be in their forum for details.

Software for most uses are install via a package manager that will download and install it for you. again your fav distro forum is the best source of detail.

AV in linux does nothing for your windows but if you download via linux and check it first you can the file share it safely into windows box.

The curser things sounds like a browser problem maybe java not up to date. some fresh installs can get up dates.

Linux for the user even advanced is not harder then windows but you have to back track and come up to speed where it is different - takes only a few honest weeks to be going strong.

Recommend you find your fav distro forum and join in I am not using nor used mint but any linux is great once you get going. PClinuxOS is my cup of tea. Good luck and welcome to the (free) other side.

Hello Bangkokburning,

If you are new with Mint 10, first play around with it for a few weeks. As mentioned in previous posting, it is NOT like windows although Mint 10 'looks' like Windows XP!

You will need to go through a 'learning curve' in order to understand how it works, for example linux is case sensite, how to install software (use Software Manager), how to edit files (gedit), and use commands like sudo, ls, iwconfig etc etc

If you live in Bangkok, you can join the meeting next week in Soi 8 Bar, Sukhumvit Soi 8 Bangkok - see http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/409242-ubuntu-it-meeting/

Use Mint 10 now for about 1 year and love it!

Cheers,

Cloggie

No - not that I'm aware of... Besides, you don't need to install any codec packs. Mint has built in support for all multimedia formats and can handle common media types out of the box. It's just a matter of choosing the right player to suit your needs. SMPlayer is a good choice and is available in the repos.

There are many guides and tutorials available online (way too many in fact). As you'll quickly discover, the Terminal is often used to perform all sorts of tasks, so this is one area you'd want to focus on. The best way to learn the ropes is through "repetition".
