Iran, Egypt to discuss reopening of embassies

2011-05-06 06:30:05 GMT+7 (ICT)

TEHRAN (BNO NEWS) -- Iranian Foreign Minister announced joint Tehran-Cairo efforts to reestablish embassies, Press TV reported Thursday.

Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi emphasized the importance of expanding bilateral ties with Egypt. He added that the establishment of friendly relations between the two countries will pose no threat to the interests of Arab nations.

"Foreign ministers of the two countries are scheduled to hold talks on issues of mutual interests in the near future," Salehi said in the Omani capital city of Muscat on Wednesday.

Salehi said that he and his Egyptian counterpart Nabil al-Arabi agreed during a telephone conversation to meet in the Indonesian resort island of Bali within the next month on the sidelines of a Non-Aligned Movement convention.

Egypt poised to open a new page with Iran, following the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak. Iran severed ties with Egypt after Cairo signed the 1978 Camp David Accords with Israel and provided asylum to Iran's deposed shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Tehran and Cairo have not had full diplomatic relations since 1979.
