What makes you think someone is trying to change the retirement provisions??

Why, after 25 years of service, would any teacher want to retire!? A teacher's salary starts out kinda low but increases every year so after 25 years they are making a lot of money, yes? Seems like they'd be fighting to not retire. Are you sure this new law isn't going to force them to retire?

According to a couple of Thai teachers I know the Government is trying to cut their Education budget by pushing teachers to take early retirement. The goals are to get 10% to 15% (if my memory serves me correctly) of the current crop of teachers to retire each year. As teachers who are near retirement age earn a lot more than new teachers (about 30K vs 8K) the government could save a lot of money by pushing these mass retirements.

Given the fact that young Uni graduates can earn more money in business than in Education, schools are having a hard time getting replacements for the retiring teachers!

In Thailand, it doesn't matter if you are talking about a Government School, a Private School or an English Language Company; saving money is universally considered to be more important than giving the students a quality education. :o

On the other hand, the younger teachers are often better educated than the older teachers, so some good might come out of this scheme after all.
