Plenty on this in ThaiVisa Motoring, but in short

1. A copy of your passport including valid permit to stay, Phuket DLT also require to see original passport from foreign buyer

2. A certificate of residence issued by Immigration or your Embassy

3. DLT will inspect vehicle when you ask to transfer ownership. Do not let seller have an authorized agency inspect vehicle, as the check of vehicles identity is very important for buyer

4. When DLT has accepted vehicle and accepted all docs for transfer, you are certified to become new owner, and can pay seller

5. Annual road tax can be payed at DLT at the same time, and it is printed in reg book page 16 and windowsticker issued. Proof of valid compulsory Insuranse is required to pay tax.

6. Insurance can be purchased at any Insurance company. Be aware of some having verry bad coverage, and are in bad financial shape not allowing them credit in reputated garages. One can seek online advice in English language at ThaiVisaInsurance.com

Agree with above reply. I would add that the Vehicle Licence office will also assess a value on the vehicle during inspection and that value attracts a small % tax payable during the transfer procedure. Which side pays this fee (buyer or seller)should be part of your price negotiation with the seller.

You will need the seller to sign the transfer documents and if the seller does not accompany you to the Licence office then then he needs to sign an additional paper, witnessed by 2 other people (a mandate), plus copies of ID/Tabian Baan. Tip - best if you get the seller to accompany you to the licence office, helps iron out the usual questions/niggles.

Before you agree to buy the vehicle, always inspect the original blue book. If the seller cannot produce the book then you have to wonder if he's the true owner, or whether a finance company has the book.

Before buying a second hand car: if it is a good/reasonably expensive one, consider buying it new. With the extremely high second hand values on the island it is IMO better value to buy new.

also be aware if the registered owner is a foreigner, Phuket DLT will usually not accept transfer unless he has a valid permit to stay

as DLT will compare the blue reg book with vehicles actual specs, the most important issue to check in blue book is owners ID number/passportnumber.

I would certainly look around at new cars and prices, there are some great deals about..the other thing i would thiink about is a good second hand reputable dealer, they can do all the paperwork, insurance ,tax, name transfer etc for you...the resale value here in Phuket is good ,so cars are good value

I can recomend the Indian familly car busines.. who have a car salesroom on the road into PHUKET town on the right side by the trafic lights on the way to Cape Panwa, they also sell motobikes there now..i have dealt with them over many years and i have always found them fair...good luck..
