Briton Drowned In Koh Samui Insist Thai Police, So Murder Investigation Is Off

If I recall there was a report about Thailand being the #1 place for UK tourists to die but I also believe it indicated the majority of these deaths were due to drunk Britts on motorbikes not wearing helmets.

Find this report and link to it, I think you will find it just says motorcycle accidents with no mention of being drunk, I would suggest the 'drunk' part comes from your own bias.

From Wikileaks :

The leading causes of death (American in Pattaya) are traffic accidents (usually involving alcohol), drug overdoses (ranging from laced cocaine to using Viagra without a prescription), suicides (from heartbroken loners) and homicides.

Pattaya is generally safe for tourists, and that all of the police elements are sincere in keeping things orderly. The one exception to this, however, is a big one: staying away from the \'dark businesses.\' This reference to Pattaya\'s infamous nightlife centers around prostitution, which inevitably attracts drugs, extortion, the mafia, and possibly trafficking in persons.

I don't think Samui is that different from Pattaya. The message is clear : stay on the right side of the law, don't abuse alcohol and drugs, and you will enjoy your stay in Thailand.

Thanks but Nisa refers to UK tourists and this report is about Americans.

I have that report C&P in some folder sorry if I can't pull it up at the moment --- ' More UK tourist deaths in thailand than in any other country, etc etc. However it was in response to a couple well publicized murders - sorry I cannot remember her name, British girl was raped and killed on Koh Samui around Xmas/New Years; attacked while making a cell phone call to her mum. The couple in Kachanaburi, shot and ran over by a Thai policeman and of course the backpacker killed in the GH in Chiang Mai. Those were the high profile ones, lots of the usuals

typical thailand, and i keep hearing people telling me thailand is so cute and safe...

Thailand is very cute and safe, but there are murders, accidents, just like the place u live in

and your point is?

As far as I can see it is the way the "death" has been handled that is being criticised.

e.g It's not convincingly established either way if it was a murder or not.

whether this is "just like the place u live in" or not it is surely completely unsatisfactory?

Anybody have any links to this story from actual newspapers?

Going by your responses to this subject, you obviously do not live in Samui. Local papers do not report or they mis-report any incident any incident that will harm the reputation of the police or the island.

Not sure of all the details in this news report (its in Thai) but it seems to be from the initial report (May 25th) and as I read it, there were liquor bottles strewn about where they think he fell from and I believe it indicates he was wearing a backpack.

The story here in the OP seems very one sided. It would be nice to hear the other side including what if any alcohol content was in his blood.

Hi Nisa,

There are a few more details from that report here:

Proportionally, the number one place to die, yes, but 10% of all murders (not deaths overall) overseas also puts Thailand high in the league-tables for unlawful killings. And how many of the reported 'suicides' and 'deaths from natural causes' might actually be attributable to nefarious intent, if competent and impartial investigations were conducted?

The figures would be more meaningful if we knew how many Britts vacationed & stayed (percentage) inThailand compared to other overseas locations. 10% of all overseas murders doesn't sound like a large percentage given my guess that Thailand is probably a very popular spot for Britt's to vacation over seas and/or reside. Be good if you had a link to the stats.

Doesn't take much research to see the people he was involved in.

Photo clearly shows his wearing Bandido's colours, not only that but he is pictured alongside the club Secretary who was arrested in Koh Samui in 2006 for money laundering and extortion.

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/76183-samui-bandidos

It may also be interesting to know that the same gang was also arrested in 2002

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/76140-100-dsi-police-officers-raid-koh-samui-arrest-briton/

Maybe things become a little bit clearer now.

All the same, my condolences to the family.

if i remember corectly no convictions came of the arrest i doubt very much it was anything to do with this group of people, i think those who new kevin will all have the same conclusion as to what happened and by whom.

Quote : " five puncture marks on his back, penetrating 3 mm into the skin, and also bruising on his back "

Maybe from someone with long finger nails ?

Thai women can be very vicious ( speaking from experience and still bearing the scars on my arm from my EX wife's fingernails !!! )

You can bet there is money involved here and that is probably why the police do not want to look too closely into this case jap.gif

Thai lady boys can also be very viciuous, and have long finger nails and stilitto heels that do penetrate quite easily 3mm, seen it happen in bars. thats my take on it anyway

He was definitely not the type to hang around ladyboys in general,

though he also would have been well known to most all the 'street people' in Chaweng as owner of a noted bar in the neighborhood. Ladyboys seem a stretch in this case.

But unlike the original post mortem conducted in Koh Samui, the second inquest confirmed two 'impact marks' on Mr. Attew's head and five puncture marks on his back, penetrating 3 mm into the skin, and also bruising on his back and neck

are they for real !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! , i have seen the picture of when they found the body, and NO WAY is this drowning !, ok he may of had some water in his lungs but how can you explain all the other injuries ! ..... this is truly shocking

i think there mayof been a lot of lost face here, so instead og admiting they where wrong, the police insist on calling this a suscide !, or are being heavily paid off

My idea, they helped him drowning after he got beaten and i would not be surprised if one day he's business is in the hands of .....and the rest you can probably guess!

poor guy!

I may be wrong.... but i think the mention of LB's was a veiled reference to the 'girl' friend....;)

The place where they suspected he fell from, then hit is head, had a backpack and liquor... which they assume was his. Without much more in the way of reports the 3mm could have come from the backpack. It would be really nice to hear from the coroner and police on this rather than taking select facts and rumors to make speculation. I've yet to even see anything about what his alcohol content was when he died .

By the way .. the skin on ones upper back is about 5mm. So, 3mm would not even be a wound that penetrated thru the skin. Without more info, I am guessing the coroner was trying to tie the backpack to him to try to confirm where he may have fallen in.

so much racism.. reverse-racism.. assumption..

not all parts of thailand are the same.. not all thais are the same.. not all 'farang' are the same..

in fact, they're all different.

this is so obvious.. <deleted>..

but the problem with common sense is, it doesn't seem to be too common.

i don't know what's wrong with a lot of the posters here..

but many seem to have some serious comprehension problems.

go to a temple and learn about buddha.. go for ten days.. go do that before posting again about thailand.

Pornthip, the head BKK Coroner, is a pretty amazing and honest women IMO. There is an interesting program about her you can see on YouTube. It actually gets into a case where she fought authorities over a "suicide' she felt was murder.

Maybe you might like to talk with some of the people concerned?

The two local papers are running to press 4-6 weeks in front - they are monthly publications.

Or did you have not a clue about this fact?

Obviously, although you might have live ON Samui for a bit (one does not live in an island) you don't got much noos . . .

I posted a link to the FCO statistics earlier in this thread (repeated below as you seem to have missed it).

http://www.fco.gov.uk/resources/en/pdf/travel-living-abroad/21151574/british-behaviour-abroad-09-10

Although it does not give a breakdown of the causes of death as the FCO now refuses to publish such figures, it does show the number of British visitors to each location. The commentary below the table states that proportionately, Thailand accounts for the highest number of British deaths overseas than any other country.

Statistically, as a Brit, you are around two and a half times more likely to die in Thailand (with 841,000 UK visitors per year) than you are in Spain (with 13,300,000 visitors per year).

Just to get back to the story, I am curious as to what is going on with the bar that I understand Kevin Attew managed or owned? Is it still open and and in business? I have no idea who is responsible for this, but often times if you follow the money trail it will lead you to useful information.

Unfortunately she lost most of her credibility when she supported the Army's claim that G200 bomb detectors actually worked and went against all scientific proof that actually they didn't.
