It’S Official, Carrefour Converted To Big-C

Well, they finally did it, and made the big move. New uniforms, new bags, new checkout counters.

The bakery is still operating, and it looks like they are still carrying the same selection of food. I wonder how long that is going to last.

I liked Carrefour, and I will miss it. It was kind of an upscale supermarket in a city where there are not too business that try to do anything above being just average.

Oh well, we still have Friendship, Food Land, and Villa. But, Carrefour had products those places did not supply.

I have been here 7 years now, and in that time I have witnessed a great deal of changes. Most of them for the positive, but losing the 2nd largest retail operation in the world because Thai policies made it impossible for them to operate profitably is not a good sign.

I noticed that too today...that hideous shade of "Big C" green everywhere. If it's any consolation, my understanding is that the Big C folks intend to keep the converted Carrefour Big Cs as "upscale" Big Cs, with their expanded bakeries, meat and produce sections, and expanded selection of imported goods.

Also, dont forget that we also gained the Tops gourmet market it Central Beach to add to our upscale shopping choices.

Same has happened here in Patong - in some way for the worse. The ground floor has been stuffed with packets of crisps, biscuits and all those fattening snackie things and the more important stuff like cleaning materials and household goods relegated to the first floor. Maybe this is what being Thai-centric in supermarket wisdom is?

Let us hope the full range of Carrefour products will be with us for a long time yet

Carrefour have not just pulled out of Thailand but also out of many other countries in South East Asia as well. It is wrong to blame the the government's policies for this.

Carrefour canceled their sale in other asian country's right after they sold up in Thailand.

Yes, that is true, but most of the Carrefour products have been replaced by Casino-branded products, i.e. same-same.

I wonder if anything will now be done about the weavils in the bags of rice? I always study the bag carefully for a few minutes before buying, probably something more often than every tenth time I will see weavils in the bag, usually if in one bag then the whole stack will be infested as presumably they are put in the bag at the factory. I have often shown these weavils to the staff and everytime they just take away the one bag I show them. I might add there is no extra charge for the weavils.

Meh no great loss, I thought Carrefour was a rancid place to shop from the get go.

From the get go it looked nice, clean and organized, but since they re-organized the store an few years ago, it looked more like a ware-house than a super-market.

I wonder what will happen with the Carrefour in Muang Chonburi. There's one along Sukhumvit and a few 100 meters further down the road there's a Big C.

More or less attached to the Central Shoppingmall in Chonburi there is also a Carrefour.........so that would mean.......3 Big C within sight along a stretch of 500 meters............

So what you are saying is that, for you, the change might end up as the lesser of 2 weavils?

The name changed, the people seems to be the same, the foreign products seems to be the same as before, except they are labelled Casino instead of Carrefour, but according to some sources in France, both come from the same suppliers.

If you look carefully, you will note that the Pattaya Carrefour has been re-branded as "Big C Extra." The Big C folks are aware that some of the Carrefour's they bought are in areas with a large foreign visitor/expat and/or upper-class Thai customer base and intend to keep the more upscale aspects of these locations (better bakeries, imported goods, etc.).

I think you are right here, but there is still a BIG difference:

The products catalog of Carrefour was maybe twice the one of Big-C!

There were hundreds of products under the Carrefour label, mainly French products, that you will not find under Big-C/Casino label. It will be hard to now find them in Pattaya, or even impossible for some of them... :(

A big loss for many expat.

I agree fully with you.For those that think that the Carrefour products are replaced with the same ones branded Csino I have some questions

Do they have 5 different spagetti sauces included bolognaise and napolitane?

Do they have pure chocolate minimum 55 % cacao at 125 Baht for 400 gram?

Do they have a whole wheat meusli with chocolate flakes for children at 99 Baht for 750 grams?

Do they have frozen vegetables like spinach and brussels sprouts at economic prices?

Do they have whole wheat crunchy toasts?

This just out of my head right away but I'm sure other members can complete the list of popular things they are missing now to as much as 2 full pages

Said it before, I will not miss the most annoying music and loud speaker slogans of any supermarket that was Carrefour. Plus they pissed me off once for selling two cans of Heineken to a Thai in front of me then refusing me, time was about 4:50pm

As long as the keep the bakery and fish counters i will be happy, if you need anything special Central Tops as someone said or Foodland along the street

There are already changes. Some of the fresh vegetables are now from Big C source, notably the crappy brown lettuce. Celery up 15 baht per kilo (Big C price). They used to have whole chicken at 59 baht (Issan style), 79 baht, and 119 baht. Now they have a choice of 99 or 119 (same as Big C) or else the two day old somewhat rancid chicken parts for 26 baht (same as Big C). I also tried using my Big C card there today and the cashier said, "Cannot use Big C. Have to use Carrefour..."

In keeping with Big C I expect any day that the music volume will go up 20 decibels and before you know it there will be large groups of Thais watching movies in the TV section!

They better not mess with the downstairs deli in the Food Court (sandwiches, salads, American Breakfast etc) but seeing that it is run by Carrefour it maybe become a thing of the past soon.

The weavils in the rice are not so much of a problem, when you put the water in the rice cooker the weavils drown and flaot to the top so you can fish them out, it's the waevils in the flour that's the problem as you get lots of black dots in your bread or cakes when they get burnt in the oven.

Big C loud speaker is much worse as you will notice when you go back in to the supermarket formally known as Carrefour.

I see the delicious "Carrefour" branded butter has been removed :annoyed:

Lord B.....

So the similarly delicious Casino butter ( same weight, same price) was out of stock?

Both are/were good cultured butter. You did know they both are cultured ( same pro-biotics as yoghurt) didn't you?

Didn't see any "Casino" butter...had to settle for some Danish Emborg (or something) stuff instead! They are still doing all the fancy fresh-baked breads, however :)
