Cops arrested during probe into murders of Mexican governor's security personnel

MONTERREY, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Mexican authorities on Thursday announced that 26 law enforcement officers have been arrested as part of an investigation into the brutal murders of two state government security personnel, Milenio television reported.

A joint operation between the Mexican Army and the State Investigative Agency resulted in the arrest of 26 agents in Zuazua municipality in the northern Nuevo Leon state, authorities said.

Among the detainees were 22 police officers, three of them women, and four transit officers. All of them we arrested at the headquarters of the Zuazua Police Department at about 7.00 a.m. local time on Thursday.

Investigators will question the law enforcement agents to determine if they were involved in the kidnapping and murder of two security personnel of Nuevo Leon Governor Rodrigo Medina.

The bodies were found at around 8 a.m. local time on Wednesday in the municipality of Guadalupe in Nuevo Leon. The assassins dropped them off on Arteaga and Chapultepec Street and then opened fire on them.

At the scene, police recovered 18 empty shells belonging to two assault rifles, an AR-15 and an AK-47. Governor Medina reiterated his fight against organized crime and said that threats will not deter his determination.

During the past week, three bodies were left hanging in the same city. And last Sunday, members of an organized crime group hung a another victim and set the body on fire as frightened residents witnessed the violent acts.
