My wife's 21 year old son has been into drinking and partying way too much, and recently tried Yaba with bad effects when coming down from it...

She wants him to spend some time in a Wat to aid his transition from "Boy to Man" and hopefully realise that there is more to life than just partying... We have ruled out their small village Wat, as this village where most of the "Partying" takes place, and where his friends are all living... We live in a larger city about 30km away from the village..

Any information, suggestions or comments will be apprciated, as I know very little regarding Wat stays, how long they stay, what is asked of them while there, costs involved, etc...

Make sure he is also determined to change his ways. If he ordains simply to follow custom or because his mum wants it but is slack about keeping the precepts seriously then he would be better off not ordaining. He would only create bad karma instead of good.

it's not the wat that matters but the teacher. Where i am in thailand, i see the men choosing certain wats to be ordained and their sole reason is the rules are lax. It would serve you better to speak to the wat's leader about your problem and take it from there. Distance is not the solution either if the rules are lax. What your son needs is good guidance and someone who can make him "see" the way.
