LIMA, PERU (BNO NEWS) -- At least three people were killed on Tuesday when Peruvian students clashed with police in a rally against a new university project in the central region of Huancavelica, El Comercio newspaper reported on Wednesday.

A 14-year-old female student and a 30-year-old local government security officer were killed during the protest against the creation of the National Autonomous University of Tayacaja, along with a 21-year-old male student. Police used tear gas and pellets to prevent the entry of the protesters to the facilities of the Huancavelica regional police headquarters.

Police chief Edward Marín Grandez said more than 5,000 protesters attacked them with homemade explosives, stones and knives to try to take away their guns. The protesters, who set three government offices ablaze earlier, also attempted to take over the police station.

Meanwhile, another group of people started protesting to accelerate the process of enacting the law, which calls for the creation of the university.
