Six injured in grenade attack in North Kashmir

2011-06-24 23:22:19 GMT+7 (ICT)

SRINAGAR (BNO NEWS) -- At least six people were injured on Friday in a grenade attack in insurgency-hit North Kashmir, officials said.

The Kashmir Dispatch reported that an unidentified person hurled a grenade at a police station in Sopore town in North Kashmir, about 55 kilometers (34 miles) from Srinagar. The grenade landed inside the premises of the police, injuring six civilians, two of them critically.

Government forces have cordoned the area and launched search operations.

Militant groups are usually blamed for attacks in the region. A guerrilla war has been going on between militants and the Indian troops stationed in Muslim-majority Kashmir, which is divided into parts administered by India and Pakistan.

The government says more than 45,000 people -including civilians, militants and troops - have died in the region over the past two decades.
