Indonesia: Police bust international drug ring in Sumatra

PEKANBARU, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- The Indonesian National Police on Wednesday uncovered an international drug ring in the island of Sumatra, where they seized drugs worth an estimated Rp 3 billion ($348,000), officials said.

Brigadier General Suedi Husein, head of Sumatra's Riau Island Police, told Antara news agency that the National Police Headquarters ordered a raid at a star-rated hotel in Pekanbaru, Sumatra in which 1.5 kilograms (3.3 pounds) of methamphetamine were seized, and two foreigner were arrested.

The raid was carried out on Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time, at the Dyan Graha Hotel, and in addition to the methamphetamine, police seized a scale, eight cellphones and two passports, one of them belonging to a Malaysian national.

During the operation, police arrested four Indonesians, and a Malaysian national identified as 'AD' and a foreigner from an African nation identified as 'Mr. T.' In addition, two villagers who work at a passenger ship company were also detained after helping traffic the methamphetamine at Sungai Apit port in the Siak District of Riau Province
