Hi Everyone,

I'm coming bak to Koh Phangnan in Spetember and although I hve been before and rented a bike long term for 100 baht p/d i just want to ge some advice on getting a bike this time roun as I am on a tight budget.

Who is the cheapest person on th island to rent from if commiting to at least 6 month rent?

And would I bsave money by buying a bike second hand for the duration of my stay?

Thanks:

18k for 6 months but the remember that if you do buy it will you want to resell it?

maybe better to talk to a bike rental place and see if you can get it for less if you pay upfront for 6 months or ask if they have one they are willing to sell.

Especially, if you are arriving in September, which is is the start of the low season... many (sometime good!?!) deals can be made!

And don't forget the bother of insuring etc etc. Is it worth it for 6 months?

And of course, at the end of the period, who are you going to sell it to and at what price?

Try and get a good long term rental when you get here would seem to be the best way forward to me.:D

I know someone on samui so they could sell it for me plus i can take it out of samui as a rental you will not. and if anything happens to the bike less hassle to

even if i sell it at half the price i paid for it still works out cheaper

I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong here, but I am pretty certain that one has to have a Retirement Visa or long term visa of some kind, or Work permit to buy a bike and transfer the registration???

That requires a letter from Samui Immigration, stating that....

(Bike should technically have the "green book" too or can pose problems trying to re sell... although many bikes here "no have" the book... could be stolen bike???)

The work around assuming it has the "green book" that is to put it into a name of a trusted person whether they be Thai or long term Farang resident...

As for renting, well prices vary...(on Samui 2500 baht a month is best I have heard of for Honda Click..... ) but have an accident an you may get dinged a hefty price for repairs.... I know someone who recently "got had" for 20,000 baht on KP, for a few scratches... The shop had his passport...:realangry: Not all rental places do rip you off for repairs.... but that is hard to know in advance.

His Medical bill was much higher than that too, so insurance a good idea...

Think you are right about the purchase requirements. This person should rent and i'd have thought the best price they'll get is 3k for a newish click or 2.5k for an older one.

Whether i'd like to be riding a motorbike on KPG during the rainy season is another matter.

Certainly worth checking out legalities....of bike purchase.... Add to cost of going to Nanthon about (600 baht return), Samui Immigration Letter (I believe 350 baht) Taxi to and from ferry and back to KP.... and the registration fee...

As for rental, it's worth shopping around for long term bike rental... Being a fairly frequent "flyer" to KP, I rent a bike for a day or two, so not sure of monthly rates.... but a new click is 150 baht a day, a Honda PCX 250 baht a day in Tongsala... More in Haad Rin from the person who had the accident experience.... I forget what he paid for a monthly rate, but it was higher than i would have paid...

Just to compare: I know in Samui here, renting a bike in Maenam Honda Click 150 a day, 2500 a month newer model, A PCX in Maenam is 300 baht a day... Chawang 500 baht a day... from what people have told me.

As for the roads on KP they are vastly improved, over the last couple of years... still a few bad spots, but for the most part pretty in good shape.
