LUCKNOW, INDIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least 38 people were killed when a train collided with a passenger bus in the northern region of India early Thursday morning, officials said.

The accident occurred at around 2 a.m. local time in the Dariyawganj area of India's Uttar Pradesh when the train collided with the bus, which was carrying 68 people from a wedding celebration in the village of Adubura, which is located in Kanshiram Nagar's district of Etah, Additional Police Superintendent Dadan Pal Singh told the Indian Express.

The train was traveling from Mathura to Chapra in the state of Bihar and rammed into the bus at an unmanned crossing in the Patiyali area of Kanshiram Nagar. According to Singh, who interviewed survivors, passengers were warning the bus driver of an oncoming train, but he ignored them and continued driving. At the crossing, the train crashed with the rear end of the bus, smashing it into several pieces.

Singh previously confirmed that 32 people had died at the scene during the incident, adding that at least 35 others were injured. However, six of the injured later succumbed to their wounds after arriving at a local hospital, bringing the number of fatal victims to 38, while 29 others remain hospitalized, 15 of them reportedly in critical condition.

It is unknown if the driver of the bus was injured as well, but according to Singh, he fled the scene after the accident.

On May 22, at least 16 people were killed at a train crossing in the district of Madhubani, Bihar, when a vehicle in which they were traveling was hit by a train. And on September 20, 2010, at least 21 people were killed and 53 injured when a stationary passenger locomotive was hit by a freight train traveling on the wrong track of the Bhaderwah railway station in Madhya Pradesh.
