1.) must always get these first before entering?

2.) what's the expected price for it?

3.) proof of employment required? what if employment is via a US company not located there?

4.) I'm 43 fyi.

Any informative links you can post that I've overlooked are appreciated.

You can enter on any visa or visa exempt. If your status changes you can change entry or obtain another or new visa from a Consulate outside Thailand.

A one year non immigrant visa costs 5,000 baht in local currency.

Employment requires a work permit in Thailand and a Thai company to get that permit.

You have not mentioned any reason for a one year visa issue - it is not a tourist visa you must have a valid reason for issue and proof of that.

Hi, thanks. "If your status changes". I saw where this visa was advertised that it was necessary to return to your country of origin to get another one. That's why I ask about the first. Employment: it's possible I'd maintain my current job for a bit when I got there...I work for an airline that flies there so...it's possible tho likely exhausting. It looks like sometime in the near term my employer will offer long-term leaves.

Where these visa were advertised didn't mention needing a valid reason for it...perhaps they also charge 3xs more for it. : )

I do have a medical issue and know they let people stay long term who are getting treatment there....hmm.

Only a few nationalities have to apply in their home country, a US citizen is not among them.

You can come to Thailand for medical reasons and get extensions of stay based on that, but would need the help of a hospital for that. Normally it is only possible to get extensions based on this if you are onable to travel, but some of the big private hospitals do have good liasons with immigration.

Other than that, you only seem to qualify for a tourist visa (or visa exempt entry if you leave within 30 days).
