Potatoes-1 Kind Only

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has bought another kind of potoao besides the ones that they sell in Macro or Tesco or the local market? I find that they are not very tasty unless putting a lot of butter and salt and pepper. In Canada we have lots of choices to choose from such as Yukon Golds(yellow) or blue potato, different potatoes for baking or mashing. Thanks

Mate, sadly, the operative word is climate. This is a tropical climate .Canada is not. So, the spuds you get here are varieties that will grow in this climate- in the North of Thailand. Some, sold by Makro , do come from Southern China. But they are not cold climate varieties, that we are used to in our home countries.For 10 years ,I tried to grow them in Buriram. Guaranteed totally 100% UNsuccessful. Did harvest (twice) about 5 little marbles over 10 years ,was my best effort.

Thanks, tried that too but no luck. After the rainy season 2years ago i planted tomatoes and cabbages and had wonderous results.

I agree the potatoes here taste bad... I make chips and they taste so bad and when i make mash potatoe i have to add lots of butter and milk to make it taste ok..

Just have to get used to it. I can mash them O,K., but cannot chip them happily. So, I buy Frozen chips from Makro , fry up very well.Straight cut, seem to work best

Try frying them in olive oil. It will add a better flavor and is healthier.

I tried in Bangkok:

100 % UNsuccessful. I think 2 little marbles was the best I could do.

I have noticed they have 2 kinds. Small and big. :)

The "big" ones are hardly big. !!!! The small ones are not always available .They are the rejects from Lays chips. Not the right size for them .You want to see big spuds ? Go to Ballarat or Tasmania.

If you go to the local markets there is plenty of sweet potato. By the way.....my local Big C has plenty of "normal" potatoes, but they have greenish skin. This is toxic, and if you don't believe me, just google it.

Pregnant women in particular should never have potatoes that are even a little bit green.

Good point, but most Thai women pregnant or not, don't eat potatoes.

Nobody, but nobody should eat any potato that is green. Very dangerous.

Spuds do turn up in masaman down here, and my wife buys a lot.

Wrong there are 4 kinds in my local Tesco

Small and big green ones? I doubt that they are are "farang" spuds. What is their Thai name?Farang spuds should only be brown.If they are "farang" spuds and they are green ,they are poisonous.Definitely NOT to be eaten

Together with one raw egg, smashed garlic and fresh black pepper. Aioli Potatoes.

Reading all the posts here about potatoes. My impression is that most of the posters don't eat potatoes, except when served with a burger or fish. :)

This one never eats burgers or fried fish, Occasionally I eat chips, I do eat a lot of spuds in stews , casseroles and soups.I have 2 crock pots(slow cookers), 1 small ,1 large. Cook in the large one ,in particular, I have about 6 to 8 meals to freeze.Very tasty ,very economical to boot

Big American baking potatoes sliced into flat chips and fried in oil (or fat, as the taste takes you) that's too hot, dipped in brown sauce?

Boiled potatoes, light but not so soft and fluffy that they fall apart, dipped into a selection of dry or wet seasonings?

Let's hope someone else sees fit to contribute some potato-porn...

The potatoes here are not ideal for chipping (too moist and waxy), but decent chips are possible.

1st : cut the chips thick - 1/2 inch or a bit more

2nd: boil in salted water for about 4-5 minutes (not too long or they'll break up)

3rd: drain and leave to cool down to room temperature

4th: fry in soybean oil

I don't know why, but soybean oil gives a crispier result than sunflower oil or olive oil. I never tried beef dripping, but I guess it would be even better tasting (but exceedingly unhealthy).
