KANDAHAR (BNO NEWS) -- At least four people were killed on Thursday after an explosion hit a mosque in Kandahar City where a memorial service for Afghan President Hamid Karzai's brother was underway on Thursday, the provincial government said.

The explosion happened around noon local time, killing at least four people and injuring 12 others. The service for Ahmed Wali Karzai was attended by many local officials, including the chief of the Kandahar Ulema Council who was believed to be among the casualties.

Ahmed Wali Karzai was assassinated on Tuesday morning when he was shot at his home by one of his bodyguards who was possibly acting on behalf of the Taliban. Karzai was elected to the Kandahar Provincial Council in 2005 and served as its chairman.

The funeral of Karzai was held on Wednesday and was attended by thousands of people, including President Hamid Karzai. U.S. President Barack Obama called President Karzai on Wednesday to personally convey his condolences.
