BOSTON, ENGLAND (BNO NEWS) -- Five people were killed on early Wednesday morning when an explosion ripped through an industrial building in eastern England, police said on Thursday. A sixth man was seriously injured.

The blast happened at around 7.28 p.m. local time when emergency services were called to the Broadfield Lane Industrial Estate in Boston, a town in Lincolnshire on the east coast of England. Six people are believed to have been inside the building.

"When we attended we found that five men had been killed and a further man had been seriously injured," a spokesperson for Lincolsnhire Police said. "The injured man has now been transferred to the new Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham. His main injuries are serious burns and he remains in intensive care."

It remained unclear on Thursday what caused the deadly explosion, but reports indicate the building was being used to illegally make vodka. "We are aware of the rumors and speculation surrounding the use of the premises where the fire and explosion took place. All of the developing lines of inquiry will be followed up in great detail and the possible illegal production of alcohol is one of those lines of inquiry," a police spokesperson said.

It was not immediately clear who the victims are, and police are asking for anyone with information to come forward.
