And So You Bought The Sg2

Recommended Posts

I just bought this http://goo.gl/EClOU

I got the similar set for my HTC Desire. Although the batteries are rated about 20% higher than the originals, in reality they only have about 2/3 capacity of the original. Still good enough to carry through a normal day (24 hour period) and convenient to be able to just pop a fresh battery whenever needed. Took about 2 weeks to arrive.

I cannot figure out how to stop international roaming on SG2 (my first Android phone so not experienced with it)? Is there a setting for voice calls in/out to be fixed to a network? When I choose preferred network it sometimes roams to Laos when the Thai signal is weak. Can I stop this happening for voice calls?

In network in the settings turn it off "auto" and on to the network you want it to stick with.

I did this in Laos so it would stick to DTAC. Worked for data as well

That seems to be working so far but not sure why (just turned off auto GSM/WCDMA to GSM only and chose DTAC) - in Thailand at least.. thanks.

Something extremely strange and unexplainable has started happening to me today so I thought I'd come here and share to see what you guys have to say about this. I recently bought the i9100t here in Thailand. I am an AIS 12call subscriber and I live in Nongprue (on the other side of Sukumvit from Pattaya). I don't have any 3G package with AIS as they are not available in my area. In fact, from where I live there is no reported 3G service avail (that I know of). I have the 250hr per month + unlimited wifi edge package they offer. I mostly just use my own wifi connection at home and typically have the data packet disabled.

Well today I noticed an H+ show up on my screen. I had my APN renamed so as to not get used to I went and disabled the wifi and renamed the APN back to internet. Low and behold I was connected via HSPDA (so it said on my screen). I downloaded the speedtest app and started testing. My ping to bkk was 116ms with 363kbps both up and down. I then went into data settings and told it to use ONLY GSM data and when it reconnected I saw the normal E on the screen. I ran the speed tests again.... 689ms ping and 110kbps/36kbps D/U. Now I ran the test several times like this and the results were somewhat consistent with the down never exceding 237kbps and the ping always over 300ms. I went back into settings and changed to only WCDMA data and once again when it connected I saw a H+ (sometimes it would switch to 3g). I ran several more speed tests and they were almost always identical with 363kbps down and 359kbps up with a ping always around 100ms. I was blown away. How is this possible? AIS doesn't have 3G around here nor do I even pay for 3g service. I disabled packet data and enabled my wifi to run some comparative speed tests and was getting pings <50ms and 4144kbps down 510kbps up which is kinda slow for my 9Mbps rated connected buy not untypical. None the less.. I was getting 3 very different results testing 3 different data connections.

I now have my packet data set to auto and I always see the H+ in my screen. Once I venture outside the house this weekend I will see if this is consistent while traveling inside Pattaya or now.

I want to note that I also have a 4G data card for my laptop that I use now and then so I thought I would throw my simcard in there and do a scan and I was unable to connect or even see any 3g networks (only edge). I also have another samsung android phone (3g enabled) that I threw my sim in and could only see and connect via edge.

Here are the results from the speedtests for all to see.

AIS apparently turned up 3G in the larger Pattaya area over the past few days, perhaps open to many? But not such high data rates? YMMV.

example:

Well thank you for that reference. I guess that means I can confirm 100% that my i9100t running stock rom and radios is able to use 3G on AIS. Horray as that is what I wanted and accidentally got the t model. So happy to see it was all marketing hype.

WebB, get setcpu and set the speed for the cpu while screen off. Otherwise, it runs at 1200mhz at off screen.

Another good program I bought (maybe I mentioned it already) is camscanner. It takes pics of anything and converts it to pdf. Takes macros of business cards or full pics of documents. Incredible little thing!!!

At what level are you setting the CPU when the screen is off. I noticed that if I told it 200Mhz then my phone would turn off.

It should go into deep sleep when the screen is off, not stay at 200 mhz. As for it turning off did you mess with any of the voltage controls? Also to check at what speeds your phone spends most of its time I highly recommend the app CPU SPY. If your phone does not spend most of its time in deep sleep there is something not right.

I was offered a SGS2 in Tukcom today for 17.2K, was very tempted but decided to wait until I've sold my HTC Desire, so I guess I'm off to the classified section. The SGS2 came with some promotion from AIS; they couldn't explain the details in English, something about 3G and 399 month. Anyone know what that is about?

Nope.. but that' a great price if it's new in the box (sealed). I got mine from the power buy in tukom for like 18400- 6% for using scb card which was by far the cheapest anyone in Tukom was selling new ones for. This was a couple weeks ago. They also gave me a free samsung bt headset.

I have the T model but use AIS and was recing 3G the past few days till today. Now seem to only be able to pick up edge. Not sure if it's just coincidence but prior to yesterday I was using the 150hr package for edge and unlimited wifi and just today it ended and I signed up for the 2GB 3g+edge+ unlimited wifi package for the same price 599.

399 sounds like a good price but what are the terms? Not seeing anything on the AIS website about this and I have been looking today as I just signed up again.

Yes, it was new in the box, still factory shrink wrapped.

Should have taken a picture of the sticker, forgot.

Sounds like a great deal.. What shop? Would be interesting to find out what the AIS 3G deal is since it seems they are working on rolling it out on 900MHz in Pattaya

This is a special promotion with the SGS2: 3 GB of 3G/EDGE+ and unlimited WiFi for 399 baht for 30 days for 12 months, pre-paid. All you really need is the code... *212329 or call 1175 and give the IMEI (would only work with a I9100KATHL version).

That was the large shop just next to the Chester Grill.

Im not to sure about it requiring the I9100KATHL version, when i was thinking about switching I gave them the imei from my i9100T and they offered me the promotion, saying that I did in fact buy the phone from them (AIS). I told them it was given to me as a gift.

I see, easy.

Is there something like a single-day unlimited 3G package such as exist with calling? As I've mentioned before I find my average usage is really remotely low as I'm always within some Wifi network, but there is the odd day where I would like unlimited use.

I have the i9100t and I just signed up for the 550thb per month plan with 2GB 3g+edge+ unlimited wifi yesterday. After reading the post here I called AIS and they are working with me to get me switched over to this better plan and refund some of the funds I spent. I'mm still waiting for them to call me back but I'm confident they are going to do it for me. I will post back with an update later as to how it plays out.

As for the GPS software.. mine came with a SpeedNavi mini disc that I haven't even looked at yet. What are folks here recommending for GPS other than google maps? I have the garmin based maps for Thailand is there a android based garmin app? Guess I need to google it.

EDIT: doesn't look like garmin's street pilot is avail for android.. just windows mobile and iphone :(

I don;t see a daily data package on the AIS 3G site, the y do have a daily EDGE+ package for 49 baht. DTAC does offer, daily, weekly and monthly 3G packages. Not sure about Truemove.

Re: the AIS 3G promotion, I just assumed you need an IMEI from the I9100KATHL version, as this is the one with the AIS sticker, and I do know they ask for the IMEI number when you register.

There is a long Android GPS thread in the GPS sub-forum with many first-person recommendations. The general consensus was that paid packages were better, if only because they allow off-line mapping/navigating.

Further Google Maps needs to be hacked for Navigation here in Thailand, but Driving Directions are available. And you can cache some limited area with Google Maps 5.7 or higher.

Ok.. well AIS won't give me the special rate cause they claim my phone didn't come from an AIS store (which it didn't). I gave them the IEMI and they could tell (so they say). They said if I could produce a receipt for the phone from an AIS shop (must have been bought FROM AIS directly, not just the AIS model) then they would give me the discounted rate. So for now I'm stuck paying the 550 for 2GB 3g/edge + unlimited wifi.....

On a positive note, seems like they turned up the speed on 3G here in pattaya (AIS). Here is what I get now

Test Date: Sep 17, 2011 1:07:53 pm

Connection Type: Hspa

Server: Surat Thani Province

Download: 5213 kbps

Upload: 2823 kbps

Ping: 33 ms

That upload is even faster than my ADSL connection.

I bought the SG2 last week as my first smart phone and I am very impressed.

My problem with it is I have hardly been able to use it since my wife and 2 year old realised what it could do. I have tried a ghost app but they have seen through it so looks like I am going to have to get a new family.
