Troops Still Insensitive

No, I don't know what most muslims think.

But seeing what their actions, or inactions are for any given event, you can deduce what they are probably thinking.

Their slowness, or, incapability to condemn barbaric behavior of their co-religionists.

The jubilation in some islamic countries at 9/11.

The demands for a British muslim parliament.

The persecution of minorities of different religions within their countries.

etc. etc. etc.

It really is a shame, because if you read about the middle-east in medieval times, they were very enlightened compared to the rest of the world. They were tolerant of other religions, valued the sciences and arts and all aspects of learning.

Why is it that the only region in the world that has not embraced democracy are the arab countries?

What percentage of Muslims want a British Muslim Parliament? were jubilant over 9/11? persecute religions in their countries? I think you are confusing the depictions of mass media with reality....but I really don't know because I don't know the answers to my questions.

Don't worry Chownah - Burr is just typical of the type of people who are intolerant of those of other faiths. Comes from ignorance and lack of exposure to other cultures. Happens in all religions and in all parts of the world.

You can try to educate them, but it is usually a waste of time.

Has WhiteShiva lived in an Arab country and work with Arabs while there? If so for how long?

That's not fair. Check out a few of my posts defending islam against the likes of Boon Mee. He thinks I'm an apologist.

Check out my posts on the thread regarding the killing of the Brazilian on the London Underground by the British police. I was a lone voice in the dark by declaring it wrong.

I used to be pro-Palestinian (and still am to a certain extent), but watching them dance in the streets after 9/11 disgusted me.

The two main reasons that my sympathy for the islamic cause has waned are:-

1. The refusal of muslims to critisize other muslims. They don't seem to realize that their religion has been hijacked by the extreme elements of their faith. Moderate muslims are doing nothing to grab it back.

2. The way muslims have voluntarily come to settle in western countries, yet reject and try to undermine our values. Compromise seems to be an alien concept with the west constantly twisting and turning to avoid offending them.

No I have not, although I have visited several Arab countries for meetings. I had also the plesure knowing several Iraqi, Egyption and Omani fellow students while at university and still keep in regular touch with several of these 20 years later. I also lived in Malaysia for more than 4 years, and have numerous friends there, most of whom are Muslims.

I was brought up in a Protestant contry, I am an agnostic, married to a Thai buddhist, and the best man at my wedding was an American Sikh.

So I consider myself to be relatively open-minded, and although far from an expert, I have learned a bit about cultures other than my own - 16 years in Asia does that to you - if you let it. And I have learned that there are good and bad people of all nationalities, races and religions, so when I hear someone talking about "Muslims" (or "Thais" or "farangs", for that matter) as if all Muslims are the same, I know they are full of manure.

Even if you don't like Arabs - and believe me, they have their fair shares of @ssholes over there (even a lot of Arabs will tell you!) - perhaps you should keep in mind that the majority of Muslims do not even live in the Middle East. And also that the majority of Muslims are just like us, they want to live in peace, be healthy, have a good job, prosper, live a happy life and see their kids grow up to become good people.

Of course there are differences in beliefs, values or opinions between me and my Muslim friends, but in the end they are all insignificant compared to what we have in common.

And besides - the world would be so dull & boring if we were all the same, anyway.

I posted this in a response in a thread about the violence in the south.

Hardly the post of an anti muslim.

"I don't know too much about the causes of the problems in the south. I do know that it isn't just a simple demand for independence. That is the end result from having their grievances ignored for so long.

I think that a succesion of Thai governments have not invested in the South. The southerners don't see much of the vast amounts of money that is made from the oil extracted off their coasts. I also beleive that the muslims have been discriminated against when it comes to government jobs. They have been treated as second class citizens by their government. Don't forget, there are two sides to every story".

OK, Burr - I apologize for my rather rash comment. And I do share some of your concerns, as do many Muslims, but the solution must be to try to build bridges, not pointing fingers.

As for Muslims failing to share our values when emigrating to the west - compare that with many expats living in Thailand keeping to themselves. But that may perhaps be a subject for another thread. :o

So again, please forgive me for my remark above. I'll buy you a beer if I ever bump into you in a TV outing! :D

Does "you" mean me or the general reader? I don't want people to infer from your post that I have said I don't like Arabs. And I never said Arab = Muslim and Muslim = Arab. I understand you are only making a statement of fact but somehow I am included in it when I should not be.

I'm not a stickler but this isn't a casual verbal conversation where things are forgotten as we move along with the discussion. What was typed can sit here and be misinterpreted again and again. I posted my questions because I wished to know from where you speak.

OK, aughie, I'll buy you a beer as well then, but that's it! I'd better stop offending people before I run out of money! :o

And - no, the "you" was not directed at you. I should have used "one" instead. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

Not to worry I got a feeling I'll be offering to buy you a beer here soon enough. Either way the next one is on me. :o

I think I've got the answer.....the crusades.....those christians kept going down to the muslim part of the world and slaughtering them....I think this happened more than once. Historically the muslims have alot of good reasons to be a bit wary of christians.....even now the evagelical christians are revving up there salvationmobiles for a quick assault on the muslim savages in Iraq and are just waiting for the signal to attack.....its really disgusting in my view. I think that muslims tend to deal with themselves and they don't try to go convert people around the world..perhaps this is because they know from their own history what a bad thing it really is.

....and they don't try to go convert people around the world..

Except if you want to marry one of them.....

or you don't want to be beheaded or shot in one of their countries.
