Five Thai army officers killed in helicopter crash

2011-07-18 01:42:41 GMT+7 (ICT)

BANGKOK (BNO NEWS) -- Thai authorities located the bodies of five military officers who were killed when their military helicopter crashed in Thailand's largest national park, officials said on Sunday.

Thai News Agency MCOT reported that the helicopter crashed in bad weather during a mission to airlift troops dispatched to Krachan National Park to combat forest encroachment and illegal logging. The helicopter wreckage was completely damaged and all five passengers were killed.

Authorities were unable to move the bodies out of the crash site located near the Thai-Myanmar border. The bad weather prevented the landing of another helicopter to retrieve the bodies out of the forest.

A forest protection unit from the national park will be dispatched by helicopter to the nearest possible area to recover the bodies. The mission is expected to take at least one day.
