KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A close aide to Afghan President Hamid Karzai was among several people killed on Sunday during an attack on his residence, officials said on Monday.

Presidential adviser and former Uruzgan Governor Jan Mohammad Khan was killed during an attack carried out on Sunday at around 8 p.m. local time at his residence in the Karti Char area of Kabul, which is located near the third police district, head of the police crime branch, Colonel Mohammad Zahir told Pajhwok Afghan News.

According to police sources of the media outlet, a suicide bomber detonated explosives at the entrance of the residence after which a group of three gunmen raided the house, which is located in a residential area with tight security, and shot him dead.

During the attack, Mohammad Hashim Watanwal, a representative from central Uruzgan province in lower house of Parliament, was also killed. In addition, one of Jan Mohammad Khan's sons and his three guards were also killed before police were able to kill the gunmen.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has claimed that the militant group was behind the attack, although the claim could not be independently confirmed as the group frequently makes false claims of responsibility.

The attack came less than a week after Karzai's brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai, was assassinated last Tuesday morning when he was shot at his home by one of his bodyguards who was possibly acting on behalf of the Taliban. He was elected to the Kandahar Provincial Council in 2005 and served as its chairman.

Furthermore, an explosion struck a mosque in Kandahar City where a memorial service was being held for Wali Karzai. At least four people were killed and 12 others were injured during the attack.

Yet more sad news from that sad part of the world. The Taliban and their sympathizers are adept at killing civilians in a sucker punch sort of way, but they're kicking their country in the gonads each time they do so. Perhaps they need some more beautiful Buddhist sculptures to destroy - would that make them happy?
