If I want to just cross the border into Mae Sai to do some shopping do I need to get a re-entry permit? Just for a few hours not staying over. Currently here on one year extension of stay valid until Dec 17. US Citizen. Extension of stay based on ED visa.

Thanks for any responses!

You used to be able to get a day pass where you left your passport with Thai immigration and took a photocopy of it across to Tachilek. Same $10 entry fee for Myanmar. Might be worth ringing Maesai immigration to see if they still do it.

Also used to apply at Chang Kong for trips to Laos.

Utter rubbish..lol..here is the facts..Take 2 copies of your passport to immergration give them 100 baht. They will give you a vip pass.Go over pay the other side 500 baht they may not take 10 dollars anymore..Do your shopping and then return collecting your passport back on the Thai side. You leave your passport on the Thai side.I do it often.Cheaper than wasting a re entry permit..Have fun..

I can confirm that I too went the "VIP Day Pass" route, with no problems, about a year ago. You leave Thailand, and enter Burma for a few hours, but your passport doesn't, hence no need for a Re-Entry Permit.

Cost 100B vs 1,000B for a permit, but you still pay the Burmese their $10/500B, with this more-informal arrangement. B)

Hi all,

Replying to an over a year old post so I would like to know if this is still true. After reading onwards I have seen reports of since mid last year that you need a re-entry permit no matter what now?

I am currently on an ED-Visa in Chiang Mai that I renew every 90days. I would rather not pay the extra 1000 baht just for a little shopping in Mae Sai. I will be doing the usual crossing the border VIP day pass for some shopping in 3 days from now. (If I can without invalidating my ED-Visa that is). Please let me know folks! Thanks.

Regards,

David

Should be no problem getting the day pass. Have not heard of any changes or needing a re-entry permit for the day pass. But make your intentions clear to immigration so they don't officially stamp you out.

Heya Mario,

Ahh, that's great news. Yes I will be careful on arrival and departure on the border just in case. I read that the day pass is literally just that, and it shouldn't do anything to my visa. Just last time I had a double entry visa, so did my visa run to Mae Sai which they indeed did stamp my visa out and back in again. Wouldn't want that to just happen automatically. :)
