Death toll climbs to 17 in Norway attacks

Oslo - A double terrorist attack in Norway on Friday claimed at least 17 people, with many more injured, after a bomb exploded in central Oslo followed shortly afterwards by a shooting spree at a political youth camp 10 kilomteres outside the capital.

Police said the twin attacks were linked.

Seven people were killed in the mid-afternoon bomb explosion that went off outside government buildings in Oslo, leaving scenes of carnage.

Meanwhile, Police Chief Sveinung Sponheim said late Friday that 10 dead were reported from the shooting on the island of Utoya, about 10 kilometres west of Oslo where the youth camp was being held.

The situation at the island was chaotic and bomb disposal experts were checking the island as hundreds of youth were being evacuated, he said.

Norwegian media showed pictures of pixellated bodies scattered across clifftops on the island.
