MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- Mexico's poverty rate jumped from 44.5 percent to 48.8 percent from 2008 to 2010, according to a report released on Friday by the National Political and Social Development Commission (Coneval).

According to the report, in 2008, Mexico had 48.8 million people living in poverty, but the figure increased to approximately 52 million in 2010, as the country's total population was registered at around 112 million. The study also showed that those living in extreme poverty stood unchanged at 11.7 million, although the rate dropped from 10.6 to 10.4 percent.

Coneval Secretary General Gonzalo Hernandez Licona said that during the two-year interval, the states of Veracruz, Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Oaxaca, and Baja California had the highest increase of people living in poverty. He added that the increasing number is mostly due to reduced income and lack of food as a wider global crisis continues.

Meanwhile, states with an increasing number of people living in extreme poverty were the states of Mexico, Veracruz, Jalisco, Queretaro, and Puebla.

Meanwhile, Mexico's economy is the 11th largest in the world and the per capita GDP is over $15,000. And you get sob stories like this. Well, Mexicans can vote and direct their nation in any direction they wish. The fact that they fail to do so says something about them, not endemic poverty and the lack of resources. The problem with Mexico is Mexicans.

No. It's drug cartels destroying the country. Weapons easily imported from the USA don't help matters. Those weapons are purchased from the proceeds of selling the drugs to eager North American consumers.

Mexico is what Thailand nearly was had it not been for the campaign against the Burmese meth labs and trafficers during the Thai drug war.

the per capita GDP is over $15,000.

The World Bank says $8000.

Like all these things, there are going to be tons of reasons but one which stands out is NAFTA, which was a disaster for many Mexicans, though not, as with all neo-liberal policies, for the elite, who coined in it.
