Ok looking at a website it appears the countersignatory has to live in the UK.

I have a freind from the UK teaching in bangkok close to where i live. Is it possible for him to countersign for me as i have know him for well over 2 years.

Anyone had any problems?

Also it states when renewing your passport via post to hong kong that you have to copy the data page only and send it rather than the complete passport! What about visas and current stamp? Or do you just get these transfers at goverment complex in Chang Wattana?

Thanks in advance :)

A counter signatory is only in the case of a new passport not a renewal if you have not changed that much since the last one, if my memory serves me right.

Correct....

Current permission to stay stamp is done in Thailand, visa's are not transferred.

Tips for completing the form

* Please ensure that you include the address to which you would like your passport to be sent. If the delivery address is different to your residential address, please clearly state the delivery address under 'Other information.' We cannot send passports to the UK or to any other country outside the country from which you have made your application.

* Complete sections 1a, 1b*, 2*, 3a*, 3b*, 4, 5*, 6, 7*, 8 and 9 (*if applicable). If you were born outside the UK you must complete section 2.

* Ensure you sign within the signature box (it must be WITHIN the border i.e. the white area of the box) at Section 8 on Page 4 and initial the bottom of all pages of the downloaded form.

* Countersignature of the form and photographs is not necessary for those people over 16 renewing a passport, unless your appearance has changed significantly since your previous passport was issued.

* Ensure that you have indicated whether you require a 32 or 48 page passport (on the front of the form).

I got my teacher friend,UK citizen, to countersign the form and the back of one photo just in case. It does say somewhere that in case of living overseas this is OK.

The rule about sending only a copy is specific to Thailand. Because of this I also sent a copy of my last entry stamp just to show that this is where I lived.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Well i will be applying for a renewal for my daughter at the same time so i guess i need a countersignature for her, she is 5.

Would a Teacher at her School here in bangkok be ok? Easier for me as i dont see my mate much. But if the teacher isnt wise to do then my mate is it.

There is enough space to make notes on the application i guess anyway so can explain she is living in thailand and at school here.

highlights

Applications for children under 16 must be countersigned. The passport application must be countersigned at section 8 by someone who has known the parent or carer for at least two years. They must be over 18, hold a current British or Irish (or be a Commonwealth Citizen if none of these options are possible) passport, be willing to write their passport number on the form. They should work in a recognised profession or otherwise have good standing in the community. This is to help confirm the identity of the child. The counter signatories will also need to endorse one of the photographs.

I recently renewed my passport.....thought I needed a new photo....got the photographer to countersign 'true likeness' ....'slight exageration'that I was known to him for 3 years'...signatory does'nt have to be british....ther countersign form allows a slot to put natioality.

New passport from Hong Kong 3 weeks later.

You do not need a counter signatory, read the requirements from HKG.

A child needs one, who has a British or Irish Passport, or is from a Commonwealth Country.

The links I gave are from HKG

WRONG !! if your appearance has changed you need new photos and they need to be countersigned.

In my case, the ravages of 10 years in Russia,Africa and now Thailand had certainly changed my appearance, although I guess someone younger would not need new ones.

Remember that a current passport could well have a photo 20 years old if it had been renewed once before.
