webfact Posted August 4, 2011 Share Posted August 4, 2011 Thai PM-elect denies Thaksin picking cabinet BANGKOK, August 4, 2011 (AFP) - On the eve of becoming Thailand's first female premier, Yingluck Shinawatra denied reports on Thursday that her brother Thaksin would be making government appointments. Yingluck, who has been described as Thaksin's "clone", rejected suggestions from Thai media that the ousted former leader is involved in allocating cabinet posts. "Cabinet selection is being worked out here in Thailand and Thaksin and other members of the family have no involvement," said Yingluck, who is set to be voted in as premier by lawmakers on Friday. Thaksin was removed from power in a 2006 military coup and lives abroad to avoid a jail term for corruption. But he remains influential and several local newspapers have reported that he will hand-pick the new government line-up. Political novice Yingluck was transformed from a relatively unknown businesswoman to elected leader in a matter of weeks on the back of her fugitive brother's popularity. However, since her Puea Thai party won a thumping majority in the July 3 election, she has sought to proclaim a level of independence from Thaksin. The Democrat Party of outgoing prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has lodged an as yet unresolved complaint against Puea Thai, alleging that banned politicians were involved in its campaign over its slogan "Thaksin thinks, Puea Thai does". Also on Thursday, Puea Thai said Yingluck's candidacy for prime minister had unanimous approval from party members. The parliamentary vote on Friday is expected to be a formality as Yingluck's party and its coalition partners control three fifths of the lower house, after which she will need to wait for official royal endorsement. Thailand's 28th prime minister faces the challenge of bringing stability to the kingdom, which has been politically turbulent in the five years since Thaksin's ouster. Other Thaksin allies have been removed from power by the courts following the coup and the country has seen damaging pro- and anti- Thaksin street protests. They culminated in mass demonstrations by his "Red Shirt" followers in Bangkok last year, which ended with a military assault and more than 90 people dead. slapout Posted August 4, 2011 Share Posted August 4, 2011 The Thai media print a lot of statements which are attributed to senior officials, unnamed sources, etc. Since the election, they have quoted people being upset, selling of positions, not selling positions, brother picking the cabinet, brother not picking the cabinet, ex in laws being involved in selection, etc, etc. I wonder if those who contribute to all the rumors and innuendo are not rejected, jealous, past use by date, gossips who just like to hear their own voice and read their own print. Many Thai people admit to little planning for most things they do, with the possible exception of meal time, so I can really envision that no one involved knows what the final result is going to be, in regard to cabinet selection. It will take some time to see who does a good job and who does not, but the new line up should be at least be given the opportunity to prove they can provide what the peoples expect and what is good for Thailand. He went on to refute the report that army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha lobbied Thaksin to name his favored candidate as the defense minister. How she gonna explain this then? canda Posted August 4, 2011 Share Posted August 4, 2011 What's not hard to believe about this whole situation, since the election has been done & dusted, I have read so many posts on the idiosyncracies of the Pheu Thai part as a whole, the above certainly doesn't surprise me at all. Slightly off topic, but still pertaining to the above, over dinner last weekend a good friend from Oz & his Thai partner mentioned they had recently made a quick visit to the family in Udon Thani, both of them were emphatic that not only the relatives, but every voting aged person in the not so small village was given 2,000 baht to vote Pheu Thai and were proud to talk about it quite frankly. It makes one wonder, just how many villagers throughout Thailand might just have been given a 2,000 baht helping hand to assist Mr Thaksin's defacto party to succeed in their quest and for that matter, just who might have plenty of money to give that very gift so kindly. So now, when I read on a daily basis all sort of snippets related to the new kids on the block and an old man in Dubai reaching out so gently to guide his flock into some sort of orderly government, I wonder what is in store for this once great country.... hush, hush, quiet as we go....only the Shinawatras will know ! Why does she feel compelled to continually dig herself in to ruts which will only prove she's a liar? Oh, I know, that's what she's supposed to say. But does it really work for the Thai people - who she's aiming the lies at? Are regular Thai people really that gullible? Perhaps Thais accept lies like they accept loud sounds and dogs barking/pooping throughout their cities. Dogs bark all night, and politicians lie when they speak - that's just the way it is here in LOS, so just accept it (that's what they'd probably tell me). A farang friend once told me he didn't hear the dogs barking because he did a Buddhist practice of being able to tune it out. Well, if that's so, he's a more capable man than I. Someone needs to get a move-on, as there are now only 5 months left, to "make every Thai rich", and the clock is still ticking ! It made me think of all the beautiful thai women that on surface appear all looks and a meager sister, but really are the force that drives the family. I have met many clever and even devious Thai women that use their minds, bodies and six sense to get ahead despite their over bearing brothers. Anyone who has spent enough time in the LOS must know what I am talking about, worthless men depending on their women. Some of those women succeed despite it all. How truly sad for you that you have chosen to take sides in a fight you will never understand and worse you believe that what is happening right now politically is good for the country in the long run. Unlike you I have not taken a "color" but only wish for the best for Thailand sadly too many people like you seem to think somehow now the "poor" are going to have their say, when it's just a different group of rich with their noses in the trough. I don't know about Thai people at large but I do know that all the people in my wife's family laugh every time they read something like that and comment about how everybody knows she is just a Proxy for her brother and NOTHING will happen without him saying ok to it... yet they just accept this insanity as part of life in Thailand. Has had a lot of dares from the Nation' writers, but has stuck to what has needed to be done. All this Mr T talk; Yingluck is now Prime Minister and he is still out of the country. I don't doubt Mr T will be back in Thailand, but what capacity is still subjective; I see him as just wanting his money back? Revenge, well 'do unto others as they would do unto you'. When most of the Western Press and commentary leans towards Mr T as the persecuted, I would think Mr T's opponents may develop a low profile. But then again isn't this just Thai politics? My Thai wife and I will move to Thailand next year. I'm being paid in EUR, my wife in USD. With both these currencies now tumbling down the drain, the last thing we need is a competent Thai government that will keep the THB going strong. What a farce!!! I hope DSI is doing a little eaves dropping on some certain individuals in the Phea Thai party and I am sure they will find evidence of Mr Thaksin's involvement both running up to the election and influencing any decisions to be made in relation to government ministerial positions. The current lot are all the same colour, they always have been, it's just a simple identifying metaphor for choosing sides..... the material however is another matter.... right now it's Chantilly lace with a pretty face, a pony tail a hangin' down, a wiggle in the walk and a giggle in the talk.
