Can anybody recommend a good (honest?) defence lawyer in Chaiyaphum as my 15 year old stepson has done something stupid with his 13 year old girlfriend and her family and or the court want more money than I can afford.

Be careful with lawyers. Anyone can give advise on law in Thailand, but to represent someone in court they need to be certificated. My wife got a 'lawyer' to represent her brother, costing her money she didn't really have. All seem to be going fine until the court date, when the ,so called, lawyer never turn up in court. Her brother was subsequently given jail.

It seems no lawyer my wife spoke to are interested in going to court, only want to give "helpful" advice. The way to go it seems is to do some oiling up front and to try and keep everybody sweet. Nothing is clear cut in LOS :bah:..

As there are a number of Thai and Isaan lawyer associations that can be found online - might be helpful or not.

I'm guessing that the girl's family are smelling blood knowning that there is a Farang familial tie....par for the course.

Quite often, in these situations [depending on where you are], such matters can be resolved amicably through a third-party village/district headman or sometimes an village ombudsman.

Or....just let him go to jail. Harsh yes, but still young enough to learn.

Let the accusing family open a court case first, and if they do, you will have the documents ready for defending your step son. You could contact a local lawyer or http://www.sunbeltasia.com who is a sponsor of this website. Email them for a free advise.

Cheers

The girls familiy don't give a sh£t about their girl or my stepson, all they want is money...they see this as a big payday.

Anyway there is talking going on.. headmen from both villages involved..cos this started as 800k Baht demand now it's down to 100k B, I understand it's normally 20k for non falang family.

Yes, his mother is preparing him for jail but it would not be for more than a few days or hours, then we can bail him out. Crazy to think they would consider sending a boy with unblemished record away.

One of my wife's staff's son did the same thing. Thai on Thai. Baanok people. 50k baht paid to the girl's family.

Happened to my wife's adopeted son 2 months ago,

Starts out with threating to go the police, jail time etc. The usuall BS and carrying on.

They wanted 100K and two baht gold. Smelled some falang money me thinks. At the meeting at our house with all the village old folks and wise people I had the wife tell them I think its BS and am not involved and I walked back inside the house.

They settled on 40K, that my wife paid out of her own account, I refused to be involved

Two months on and the girl has left him (she's 16, he's 21)

Next time have him go to the local karaoke, much cheaper. :)

My missus says 10,000 is adequate. If they don't accept, let it to go to court. Knowing that they will have to pay legal fees will be enough for them to take the money and run.

....to hunt down another son, stepson, relation of a Farang.

Quite the racket.;)

I really don't think it's that devious, that would require forethought and planning.

I like to think of the locals actions and response's to events as Brownian movement for people. :whistling:

I would tell the Thai family

the boy is a step-son. If they want the father's money

then they will have to go after the real Thai father

and then they will see how much they will get.

Yes ok I'll try that one  !!

It's the grandmother who is the problem, she has lost face big time cos she was supposed to be in charge of the girl while the parents work in BKK. The crusty one went straight to the police then to the hospital for DNA swab. She should have come to our home, then it could have been settled quite quickly.

Now the girl has been dragged off to BKK to new (private) school. I expect they think we are going to pay for her education!! The girl still calls our boy every day and they talk about marriage and all that sh%t, but as we all know too well it aint gonna last more than 2 years!

8 days to judgement day

And these young folks still don't practice the safe sex rountine. They're oblivious to it [especially teenage], even when birth control apparatuses are freely available at any provincial clinic - no questions asked.

The real father doesn't count. You are in the background as a falang and they try to get out most possible. My older step son is 15 now and half the village set their daughters on him. He enjoys it, but my hairs turn grey, at least the remaining ones..... I agree with posts above, let the girls family go to court if you cannot come together on a reasonable price (up to 50 to 80 K is OK for welthy Thais in the village as well (the face game))

The girls are usually from the poorer families and the hurdle to go to court is very high for them....

It's an absolut unpleasant situation and there is only few you can do about. I try it with free condoms for the boys (anytime accessible in the house) and I tried to teach, but unfortunately "sex" is a tabu to speak about and you will only get red faces or childish laughter from the youngsters. I told my older son that I will claim back each single penny from him, even it will take a live time to get all back! TIT

Last month there was a hearing that involved all parties. Everybody seemed happy to accept their payoffs…30K to family 10K to court officials.

However my wife and stepson were requested today to return to court today for something that was unclear to me. A final judgement it turns out and the judge ordered the boy to be locked up for 1 month in Korat because of the severity of the case!!!

He’s in Police detention in Chaiyaphum tonight and goes to Korat tomorrow. What can I do?

What good it will do anybody to have him locked up is beyond me! He’ll miss the first 3 weeks of high school and instead have 3 weeks of criminal association!!

Feel gutted, especially as I had to leave LOS for work 2 days ago.

Let him serve his month and think about whatever he did. Otherwise, it's not his money that was paid out and he gets off free, which means he will probably do it again. Knowing he has a farang step-father who bails him out of his troubles is not a good thing.

The irony is, a sizable percentage of the Isaan girls will end up working as prostitutes. This ridiculous practice essentially teaches them at a young age that they can get money for laying on their back.

And the cycle continues.
