News_Editor Posted August 10, 2011 Share Posted August 10, 2011 Riots and looting spreads to Greater Manchester on fourth day of violence 2011-08-10 21:14:26 GMT+7 (ICT) MANCHESTER (BNO NEWS) -- Riots and widespread looting spread to parts of Greater Manchester in northwest England on Tuesday evening as violence continued in England for a fourth day. The unrest in Manchester city began on late Tuesday afternoon before it spread to neighboring Salford. "Last night's shameful destruction saw some of the worst scenes I have ever witnessed as a police officer," said Greater Manchester Police Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan. "What we have seen are serious and unprecedented levels of violence and criminality on Greater Manchester's streets. These are shameful actions from criminals who have attacked our cities." In Manchester city center, scores of shops were looted as rioters turned against police. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue reported 155 fires across Manchester city center and in Salford, including fires at Miss Selfridge in Manchester city and a Lidl supermarket in Salford. Around 100 premises across the cities were seriously damaged and a number of police vehicles were damaged as well. In addition to widespread damage and looting, ten officers were injured in Greater Manchester while trying to contain the violence. 113 people - aged between 15 and 58 - were arrested in connection with Tuesday's riots. "What we have seen are serious and unprecedented levels of violence and criminality on Greater Manchester's streets. These are shameful actions from criminals who have attacked our cities," Shewan said. "Make no mistake - these people cannot hide behind any kind of political or moral banner to justify their actions. They are opportunists who have no respect for the law or our fine city." Police said one suspected looter turned himself in at a Manchester city police station after seeing himself on the social networking website Facebook. "[Greater Manchester Police] urges anyone else involved in disorder, violence or looting to do the same before we come knocking on your door," a police spokesperson said. On Wednesday, two men aged 22 and 27 and a woman aged 23 were arrested in Salford on suspicious of looting a Cash Converters. Labelled items from Cash Converters, which had been looted the previous evening, were found at the address. "We have acted on intelligence coming in from the community and have taken immediate action. We will continue to identify those involved in the violence and looting in Salford and make sure they are brought to justice," Detective Chief Inspector Bill McGreavy said about the arrests. The riots in England began on Saturday in the Tottenham area of London in protest over the death of 29-year-old Mark Duggan, who was shot and killed by police on Thursday when they attempted to arrest him. A gun belonging to Duggan, who was an alleged cocaine dealer, was reportedly recovered at the scene. Although the unrest initially focused on the fatal shooting of Duggan, the riots quickly escalated when youth and criminal opportunists joined in. It spread to other cities such as Liverpool and Birmingham on Monday evening. We didnt take priosners then BUT now its all on camera, I WILL GUARUANTEE YOU THAT SEVERAL OFFICERS IN ENGLAND WILL BE PROSECTED FOR GOING OVER THE TOP and "unfairly treating the poor youth" what the ********** is going on here. Its pathetic to watch and listen to whats going on There will be a big public enquiry, how many more of these totally crap committees/ enquiries do we need to "establish" what went on. Normal people will just have had enough of these scum, I HOPE THE SITUATION WILL REVERSE FOR THE GOOD GUYS and not just a fightback but a 5 year sentence passed immediately for ANY body convicted of any criminal offense, (don't think that will happen not British way) Well it must happen to get back our way of life,,,, Watch the court sentenses this will be a laugh...... Anybody remember, Notting Hill Riots, Brixton riots, lewisham riots, Southall Riots etc That's just London not to mentioned Toxeth, bristol etc anything in common work it out for yourselves mmmmmmm? Manchester City Council said the city would be open for business as usual with a clean-up planned at Piccadilly Gardens. The trio was struck by a car which mounted a pavement in Dudley Road on Wednesday morning. METRO WEB REPORTER - 10th August, 2011 Video footage of the incident showed a young man sitting on the pavement nursing a bleeding mouth, before a group of youths come along and appear to help him up - only to steal his possessions. After being posted on You Tube, the recording went viral as people across the country expressed their disbelief at the callous acts committed by the rioters. The victim has now been identified as 20-year-old Mohammed Ashraf Haziq, a first-year student on a scholarship at Kaplan University in Islington. Even when punished with a sentance, I somewhat feel that justice is not being done. There is a lot to be said for the many countries that dish out the punishment equivalent to that of the nature of the crime. An eye for eye is the only way, The UK lost the plot decades ago. The tree huggers are in charge and anyone who denies these thugs their 'human rights' will be in serious trouble. I would force those over 18, who are found to be guilty, to be conscripted into the army. Once fully trained send them to Afganistan where they can be as thuggish as they like. In a statement the PSNI said they could not provide any officers, but were reviewing other ways to offer support. They said UK forces had been contacted by the Police National Information Co-ordination Centre (PNICC) to see what resources they could offer. The police would not say how many Land Rovers had been offered. "We are currently reviewing how and where we may be able to provide support to our colleagues in line with their requests," the PSNI said. Isn't it ironic that just over a year ago, the UK (among other countries) was issuing the same warnings about travelling to Thailand during the red shirt problems.
