BANGKOK, Aug 11 – An Iranian man on Wednesday was detained at Thailand’s main international airport for smuggling 3.5 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, also known as 'ice,' worth Bt12.2 million (about US$420,000), Customs Department Director-General Prasong Poontaneat told a news briefing.

Mohammadreza Mohammadi, 26, was detained Wednesday morning at Suvarnabhumi Airport with the drug ‘ice’, crystal meth, hidden in a specially-made compartment in his baggage.

The arrest followed a tip-off that a suspect would smuggle the illegal drug into the kingdom.

The detainee told Thai officials that he flew from Iraq’s Erbil via the United Arab Emirates’s Abu Dhabi to Thailand by Etihad Airways. He was hired for $5,000 to smuggle the drug, intending to deliver it to drug dealers in Thailand.

Initially, the alleged drug trafficker was charged with possessing and smuggling the illicit drug into the kingdom and was transferred to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau for further investigation. (MCOT online news)

Meth arrest

By The Nation

An Iranian man yesterday was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport allegedly carrying 3.5 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine worth Bt12.2 million.

Prasong Poontaneat, director-general of the Customs Department, told a news conference that after a tip-off that an Iranian drug mule was arriving at 7am from Iraq on an Emirates flight, customs agents stopped and searched Mohammed Reza Mohamadi, 26, who matched the description.

After "ice" was found inside a secret compartment in his suitcase, the man reportedly confessed he was hired for US$5,000 (Bt150,000) to deliver the shipment to somebody here.

Mohamadi was booked on the initial charges of possessing a controlled substance with intent to sell and importing the drug without a permit.

It looks like Iran has found a way to raise the average IQ of their population - give their idiots some drugs and send them to Thailand. I will not enter into discussion about the possible effect on the average IQ here.

Okay, so they did this on a tip. Advance notice giving the law enforcement people time to set up a sting operation. Did it ever occur to the law enforcement officials to make a deal with the guy to let him work for them in getting to the big people in the drug chain when he meets his contact in Thailand? Or maybe they let him go through immigration and customs and follow him and see who he contacts. So the courier gets the jail time and the big guys just wait for the next courier to come through. I have to wonder who tips them off. Just a few thoughts but glad they busted this guy and have the meth which I hope will stay off the street as this is nasty stuff, far worse then almost any of the other drugs out there.

I have to wonder who tips them off.

Did it ever occur to you that there would be no point in a 'sting' operation? There was no way that there would be a happy ending. The moron was set up, what he was told to do when he got to BKK was a fiction because those pulling the strings knew he'd be leaving Swampy in a police wagon. I think-that even BiB could work that out . It's a good bet that the 'snitch' resides in LoS and probably is a well connected Thai. Just think of wheels within wheels and you'll get somewhere close to the truth.

It really is quite staggering. Almost every day an Iranian or African is busted at the airport with commercial quantities of drugs. They must think the police are stupid. Theyre wrong. The thai police know whats going on. Its the foreigners who are morons.

How could an Iranian man come to LOS by himself and think he wont get searched.? Idiots.

Why arent the Iranian customs officials searching all bags(sniffer dogs) before boarding their flights to Thailand ? Crazy.

Australia customs service has those little sausage dogs that can sniff a few grams of powder at 5 paces. Buy some of those ? End of problem in Tehran.

Is it just coinsedence, or are Iranians packing more drugs to Thailand lately.

The amount of these guy's being tipped off makes it really seem like an obvious diversion for the white guy who comes through with 50kg while these clowns are busy interacting with media........ Wonder when they'll catch on ermm.gif

I wonder if these cases make in into the news in Iran? If I had an Iranian passport (shudder), i wouldn't even try to bring in a second bottle of booze.

Iranian customs officials using sniffer dogs? I was thinking along the lines of them using goats. Anyway enough of Iranian customs - like stoning women to death, invading embassies, forced amputations, public hangings.

This is just a way for the countries to finance wars and other criminal activities. Custom Officials in those countries are not going to check them because they know their people are leaving for a 'good cause' and come back with a bag filled with cash.

The checkpoints need to be at the transit as well as the arriving airports. Put them aside and search the crap out of them.

After watching on the news the events unfolding in the UK these last few days, I would have no problems with forced amputations or public hangings, especially for whover was the driving the car that killed those lads.

If no one in the UK is willing to hang them I am more than willing to do it, give us a call Mr Cameron you did say everything is on the table, would do it at the drop of a hat and not lose a nights sleep.

Now flame away.

He flew from Iraq, not from Iran...

Such an ignorant (read racist) comment u posted...

Since how come act of an individual becomes the act of the whole nation/country?

If this is the case then anything bad done by a farang in Thailand is also considered to be the act of his nation/country? :annoyed:

shouldn't they have a reality TV show like "all thai jail , all the time" (like "academy fantasia") so smuuglers-to-be can see what's awaiting them ?

It is just slightly conceivable that they set this guy up as a diversion. While the police were swarming him another mule waltzed through with a large stash. Just a thought.

Since the number of cops that will swarm on you is the same if you even bring a 1/10th or less than he carried, is is inane to propose that his 3.5kg was the diversion...

I have to wonder who tips them off.

those that want the other 90% of the shipment to get through ?

or someone who has already been caught for something and decided to help authorities for a lighter sentence

white guy ??????????

with all the homely comforts of a thai jail ? ......... might encourage more of them to do same !

I just wish this country would copy Singapore's "cnb" drug policies in their entirety. The drug problem is getting out of control in many countries and its about time Thailand shows a fresh example to the world, especially following Her Majesties from the heart speech.

More people might visit Thailand with their families if they thought it was less satanic.

:jap:

They just keep coming and keep getting caught. Are people really this stupid?

Glad he wasn't a black guy or people would be screaming racism.

There might be stories with lots of success. Who knows how many drug mules pass undetected. About them you don't read in the newspaper.
