Since Thailand is one of the most corrupt countries in SE Asia, what could possibly make more sense than to take a convicted criminal and put him in charge of creating more business for Thailand ? The Elite card worked out so well, I can hardly wait for more brilliant ideas.....

The 300,000 new rai for Thailand is my favorite.

Incoming Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has announced that her Pheu Thai-led government will push forward three mega projects including land reclamation from sea.

According to Ms Yingluck, the three mega projects include land reclamation of 200,000-300,000 rai with an operating cost of 12.5 billion baht per four square metres, rail transportation from Bangkok to other provinces and integrated water management in 25 river basins.

Ex-Prime Minister Pol Lt-Col Thaksin Shinawatra had mentioned the three projects after the Pheu Thai won the 3 July general election, saying the Pheu Thai-led government would undertake those mega projects for growth distribution.

is the man a criminal if his political enemies, once in power, make certain that he is convicted of something, or even *anything* ? Since the current convictions are clearly political, the convictions lose their authenticity - whether the convictions were correct or not.

Objectively, it is clear that Thaskin did many things while in power to benefit himself and his family. Whether you like him or not, that much is clear. Perhaps his actions were criminal...

But also - whether you like him or not - it is equally clear that the charges and the conviction against him are politically motivated, just as was the dissolution of the PPP, most of the terrorism and arson charges against the red shirts, etc. This entire tangle of recent history is a difficult mess to sort out.

(side note here : Nick Nostiltz's 2 books "Red vs Yellow" are a great help in sorting out current events ! )

Could you please explain how the motivation of those bringing charges, heard by a court and found to be accurate and guilt established (without consideration of the prosecutor's motivation) suddenly cause the convictions to lose their authenticity?

It is very plainly obvious the "we" consists of the vast majority of Thai voters.

Not sure what was trumped up about Thaksin money-laundering funds through his chauffeur and family members to avoid taxes. He is under Thai law a convicted criminal. In no way has the election changed that. The attempt to get him appointed as an official ambassador has nothing to do with exports. It has everything to do with legitimizing Thaksin by the government as a softening up process to get him back. He knows that there will not be a referendum to legalize money laundering. That would be a laugh. Having him shaking hands with other country leaders will shine up his image though. The fact that the new foreign minister has asked the Japanese government to give Thaksin a visa so he can shed some crocodile tears at the scene of the Tsunami, is just for starters to show that the foreign minister for one is bought and paid for.

He "mistakenly" transferred millions of dollars worth of shares into other peoples names, including his maid and gardener, and then "forgot" about it when declaring his assets upon first becoming PM.

His government's cover up of bird flu in an attempt to protect Thai poultry farmers, leading to the death of at least one child:

"The first boy who died is believed to have picked up the virus after touching the carcasses of infected poultry in his village in western Kanchanaburi province. His father, Chamnan Boonmanut, hit out over the government's handling of the crisis on Monday. "The government knew, so why didn't they tell the public so that we could protect ourselves?" he said. "Nobody wants to get sick and die".

"Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, faced with accusations of a cover-up, has admitted his government initially kept quiet about its suspicions that avian flu had broken out, to avoid causing public panic".

Strange you should mention armchair whiners (Dem supporters), only started posting recently after a couple of years of read only. It as not escaped my attention that since the July 3rd Massacre of the Dem party more and more dem sympathisers have been posting on here. Thats a tad strange that the whiners are growing when you think it would be prudent to keep quiet after that election humiliation. I always believed that winners attract winners but the red sympathisers (in numbers) have generally stayed at about the pre election level. The voices on the political threads on here are not representative of the westerners I have met in Thailand over the last 11 years, so I can only hope the exchange rate changes in your favour asap and you can afford to get your butt off the computer and go back to the bar

Where is the evidence that Thaksin is a great businessman outside of having a monopolistic government concession that forced excessive costs on to consumers and kept out foreign competition? Did he become a brand name in any other business? All his earlier ventures seem to have failed miserably, with the exception of his dubious supply of mainframes to the police when he was the policeman who wrote the specs and organised the tender.

How many of you know the story of the goose that laid the golden eggs? Or the origins of the expression, "cooked his goose"? Thaksin knows how to keep the Thai goose happy , well fed and laying eggs, Abhisit's team was too greedy and short sighted, it cooked the goose. So Thaksin is good at skimming the cream off the milk, but the cows will only produce milk if they are well fed and happy. The Dems preferred meat to milk, so the herd suffered. The herd wants their former farmer back in control.

Sorry for the agricultural metaphors, but they are a simple way to express a complex situation.
