Thailand To Shed 'Sex Tourism' Tag Soon

The key point is that Thai prostitution is by Thai for Thai. While tourists will frequent sex spots the tourism traffic alone would never support the industry. So, how are they going to change the cultural norm of prostitution and infidelity with kept mistresses among Thais?

Agree with that. The same everywhere in the world.

What people don't understand is there is big shift in tourism in Thailand, from tourists from the west to tourist from the east, a lot from China. .

The traditional form of Thai "prostitution" (mia noi business) that is so exotic to western tourists, is very common to Asian people. They won't come to Thailand for that.

And in the future, they are are going to be the main source for tourism.

The problem is western tourists don't realize they don't represent the future of tourism for Thailand

I took my two boys (7 & 11 years old at the time) to Thailand for two months a couple years back, and they loved it. In addition to the family fun like elephant treks etc., we all got massages every day (no happy endings for the boys obviously), played pool in many a beer bar and hung out with lots of friendly professional ladies. Without exception, the ladies loved the boys as if they were their own, buying them food and drinks etc. One of the best aspects of the LOS in my view is the lack of differentiation between what is "adult" and what is "family." Within certain common-sense boundaries, of course, (I would no more want my kids exposed to pornography or violence than any other father), one of the nicest things about Thailand is its tolerant, accepting attitude to the realities of sexuality and not labeling it as "bad." It would be a shame to see that actually threatened.

Interesting anecdote, Thanks. Sexuality is not quite dead in Thailand. Paid-for sex is not threatened at all. It's only illegal.

A recent World Health Organisation (WHO) report has pegged the number of female prostitutes in the country at 2 lakh.

can someone enlighten me? how much is 2 lakh.?

thaisabai

1 lakh is 100,000 so 2 lakh would be 200,000.

are they serious ?....... 2 million would be closer, between bkk and pattaya there must be 100,000 + alone , and thats a conservative number , thai culture seems to be similar to the infamous " casting couch", ..a favour for a fiver so to speak , sure there are many thai girls who wouldn't dream of doing sexual favours instead of paying a debt or to advance there careers,.. but i dont know any !.. i read recently that it was a thai tradition to give a "respected guest " the oldest daughter for the evening,... can anyone shed a little more light on this????????,..... very interesting

Sex tourism --are you joking, you know how much a bonk is these days. Things have got out of hand and now its 3000 at least. A lady drink is an arm and a leg which is close on to 150baht for some red water.

Short time rooms are going bust too. I can barely afford a motorbike,--certainly not both like we did in the good ole days for ha loi.

I remember when 2000 a day did all three bike, bird, booze, bed.

Clearing those skanky looking, pick pocketing, AIDS ravaged African hookers from around Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok would be a good start.

What!? Eradicate the local color, so to speak? What about the rats? Those would have to go too, I suppose ... even though they're doing an excellent job of garbage ingestion ...or maybe not THAT excellent.

Can you imagine a Chinese tourist falling in love here and taking on the family?? If westerners all left there will be a few million broken homes here. We are not the B and end all,but for all the talk they would miss our money, no 150 bht at atms, and a million more things.

This IQ rating for Thailand surely is correct. BELOW THE WORLD AVERAGE,

The golf courses won't be too packed because there'll be no caddies to carry the clubs, and, what will become of the 19th hole ?

Men from all over the world come her for Thai girls and some for boys, and many for golf. Take the girls out of the equation and what will be the result?

Uhm. I dunno. Busy boys and packed golf courses?

One can only look forward with hope to the day that this does happen.

No prostitution = no loser westerners = a much better place to visit and live.

Hopefully in this lifetime and if not then in the lifetime of my daughters.

They may try to their heart's content. I have 3 points to make.

Sex tourism pays more.

Thailand is good at accommodating sex tourists.

Thailand is not so good at accommodating families. Just take a baby in a push-chair to Koh Samui and see how how that works out.

The only people who will put up with the way tourists are treated in Thailand in general are sex tourists, backpackers and people who (like me) want to live in chaos.

Well then, since you indicated three 'dids' and listed four, you'll just have to drop the 'bird' from the list and everything becomes cost-effective (much more so, at least). Or maybe you've already replaced 'bird' with a second 'booze' and didn't realize it?

All joking aside, I was told something this morning that really pee'd me off. A girl from our village who regularly visited our shop with her friends has just been packed off to Pattaya while her ' responsible ' parents lounge around at home jobless drinking 40 degrees Thai whisky and gambling away what baht they have. What's wrong with that did I hear someone say ? Well, she's JUST had her fourteenth birthday -- that's what's wrong. As long as people like this send a schoolgirl to ' work ' in Pattaya, how will Thailand shed it's seedy image ?

Does the Government truly believe that it can replace almost 14 million sex tourists per year with 14 million tourists that are only interested in sightseeing, Temples, restaurants, golf and staying at expensive hotels?

There are not 14 million sex tourists a year... get your head out of your arse!

Just for information, there are maybe 7 or 8 flights a day from Hong Kong to Bangkok, mostly all fully booked

Actually, I just checked and between Thai and Cathay there are already 10 flights. And after that there are code sharing. And the loading seems pretty heavy, especially for tomorrow a Sunday, not the most busy day of the week

Which proves what? Are you under the impression that the Chinese lack sexual urges?

BTW nearly every village (certainly every village that I have visited) has a sing-a-song/karaoke/knocking shop. My father-in-law invited me to one 2 days after my marriage, most of the male members of the family came along, and there is no doubt that it was a full-service establishment though I didn't indulge myself.

Not in our lifetimes.

Try to stop sex tourism! Give me a break. Men from all over the world come her for Thai girls and some for boys, and many for golf. Take the girls out of the equation and what will be the result?

For a family beach holiday there are many places to go.

And with cleaner beaches!!

It's one-fifth of a crore, Sahib.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

1 lakh = 100,000; 1 crore = 10 million.

May be best to leave the jokes to professionals, but in your new found spare time may I suggest a math book or two?

Guess I couldn't resist either. biggrin.gif

I think it's worth noting that not once did the quoted Thai diplomat refer to sex, the sex industry, sex tourism or anything else remotely sexual to do with Thailand or anywhere else. That all came from the author of the article.

The diplomat did refer to Thailand's reputation and the fact that making it more amenable to visiting families is on the agenda, but that isn't necessarily the same as saying anything at all concerned with sex. Maybe he was referring to improved safety and activities for families within the Thai tourism industry.

Oh well, whatever gets people chatting.....

:cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

When are they going to tell the Thais about this so called idea?

One thing I have learned about Thais and Thailand is thatthey always talk about good things to shoe off and never act on them so this isone more thing for show

Oh yeah, one more thing, what does Thailand has to offer the family, Dream World??????

Nana Plaza, both fun and educational for the kids!

Pattaya is the place that has given Thailand the bad reputation as the sex capital of the world. Why don't they start by bulldozing and cleaning that place up. Start arresting and charging the bargirls working in prostitution and thier clients send out a very clear and positive message to the sex tourists that this illegal act will no longer be tolerated. The sex tourists will stop comming after they starting spending time in the BKK Hilton. (Prostitution is after all illegal)
