I've had my Sony LCD television for about 30 months, over the last few days when the set has been on for a while the picture looks like an old photo negative.

I will drop it into a Sony Service Centre later in the week and just hope the repair isn't the same cost as a new set.

Has anybody ever had anything like this?

Sony had the best reputation for picture quality at onr time, but that was the old CRT Tv's, they have been sharing cost, R and D and likely parts with Samsung for about 10 years now. Philips do the same with LG and Sharp look to be doing the same with Toshiba. So Sony are not what they were. Are they making the sets or is someone else doing it now to cut costs? I mention that beacuse I have read that if you want a Toshiba or Sharp TV, made by those companies you have to look 37" upwards otherwise they likely to be made by Funai in Chine or another company in Thailand whose name escapes me at the moment but begins with 'O' You just dont get what you used today,so what does the badge mean, I am sorry I cannot help you directly with your questions but if you dont get a satisfactory answer from the service centre, dont but Sony again.

One of my friends in the UK, works for John Lewis Audio and TV and also takes part in the "Which" Tv tests he always used to swear by Sony but not anymore, currently he is telling me that Samsung is offering better value, but the sets in the UK are not the same as here.

Thanks for your input Nong, I'm going to take it into the service centre this morning, didn't actually know how near it is to me, a five minute walk, I must have passed it 100's of times without noticing it.

I have set myself a figure on an acceptable repair cost, it their quote exceeds that price then I will buy a new one, but it won't be a Sony. I was in Siam Paragon yesterday and was suprised how much they had come down in price.

Siam Paragon offer an three year extended warranty, though I assume that includes the first year, for 6% of the cost of the item, not bad considering what these warranties cost in the UK, but not as good as your mate in John Lewis gives, seem to recall that they give a free five year warranty.

Sony is pretty fast in their repairs when taken to a Sony Repair Center....I mean a repair center that only works on Sony equipment, has that big Sony sign, etc., versus an "authorized" Sony repair shop that also repairs a variety of other manufacturers' equipment. A couple of big advantages in using a Sony only repair center (or any manufacturers' only repair center) is because they are more experienced on specific problems with specific models, have the diagrams/schematics on-hand, have many model-specific repair parts on-hand, etc.

I took the mothers-in-law 14 year old CRT-type Sony TV (about a 30 inch screen top end TV when new...weighed a ton) into repair at a Bangkok Sony Repair Center for a horizontal problem....5 days later got the call to come pick it up/repair done/only cost about 1500 baht to repair...they replaced the TV turner amplifier assembly and one resistor in the power supply....been working good for almost 6 months now...very good picture quality....hopefully good for another 14 years.
