Girl, 4, and his father killed in Yala raid

More than 30 heavily armed men launched a brazen attack on the home of a former village head in Yala early yesterday in apparent retaliation for his helping authorities hunt down insurgents.

Killed at the scene were his son and four-year-old granddaughter, while Doloh Sengmasu, the former head of Ban Talohway, survived.

Ten people, including women and children, were wounded but reported in safe condition.

Survivors said the men in black strode to the house at about 2.30am and opened fire on village-defence volunteers there.

A gunfight ensued but the attackers later poured petrol around the house and set it on fire.

Doloh and the defence volunteers fought back fiercely.

After two hours, the attackers retreated and threw down spikes to prevent security officials from chasing after them.

Some of the attackers were believed to have been hit during the gunfight because blood was found along their escape route.

Just 3 kilometres from Doloh's house, bombs went off and toppled two power poles on a local road. Security officials surmise that the blasts were related to the attack on the former village head.

Doloh, a former separatist, has joined with authorities in ferreting out armed militants in the Southern province.

Intelligence sources were convinced Ubaideela Rommeulee, a key member of the RKK (Runda Kumpulan Kecil), might have ordered the attack to take revenge on Doloh.

Because of the attack, he lost two family members and his house, which was burned to the ground.

The insurgency has been blamed for the unrest plaguing the deep South over the past few years. All four Southern border provinces have been affected.

At 7pm on Wednesday in Songkhla, more than 10 men opened fire on a base of Border Patrol police, rangers and village-defence volunteers in Tepha district, killing Rahem Chae, a volunteer.

Wounded were Manaree Ahama, a ranger, and Nuddeen Nae, another defence volunteer.

The security officials and volunteers shot back, and the exchange lasted more than 15 minutes.

The assailants then left in two pickup trucks.

A reinforcement team met them on their escape route and a skirmish broke out.

During this clash, all security officials were safe but it was believed some of the armed insurgents were shot. They left their pickups and fled into the jungle.

Pol Colonel Ekapop Prasitwattanachai, deputy provincial police chief, said more than 100 police and administration officials had surrounded the area where the aggressors were thought to be hiding.

Well, Although Islam doesn't approve such violence, it is very easy to mislead vacuum-headed idiots to violence which unfortunately happens easier in Islam community.

How long Thailand will show tolerance to this? There should be a limit in everything, including tolerance.

And everybody keep on telling that the terrorists are really insurgents and that Suthep had to call demonstrators terrorists because the offspring of Prem are too impotent to put an end to the violence.

Thailand is not alone, this is a world wide problem. I first read of this news looking at the bigger picture - and here indeed is the bigger picture, though I suspect it will be removed as telling the truth about some things is not allowed, and that doesn't just apply to Thailand either.

Hi - it's P6 of BP; I appreciate your point; perhaps the media/public are now somehow immune to the daily reports of deaths/tragedy in that part of the country.

But I wonder, why should a newspaper be any different from eg this forum, in terms of choosing its headlines based upon what people want to read.

Today on TV, a murdered three year old is no match for a good old whine about a 15 baht cold towel.

Maybe she is not foreign enough - a murdered English child would have the server imploding.

If you do not understand the problem in the South then just dont post something which shows how narrow-minded you are... the problem in the South is not religious, it is more of ethnic and economic nature...

The South was a separate state where the people were thriving in the past... now they dont have opportunity/willingness to get higher education and find a reasonable job... the result is insurgency... if u dont have money, u have nothing to lose... so this is the end result...

Open ur eyes n see the real world... blaming everything on a religion is not an answer to any problem... :jap:
