MOSCOW (BNO NEWS) -- Russian police on Wednesday arrested 12 people during a protest rally to demand the right to freedom of assembly in central Moscow, RIA Novosti reported.

Police said some 50 people attended the Strategy-31 rally at Moscow's Triumfalnaya Square, while 100 'journalists and bloggers' covered the protest. Earlier, police urged opposition protesters to cancel the demonstration on the eve of the new school year, saying the rally could "irritate" parents and disturb people.

Police also said that many people would be making last minute plans for the start of the academic year, known as "Knowledge Day" in Russia. "The unsanctioned campaign in the center of the city will irritate them," police said.

The Strategy-31 movement calls on citizens to rally on the last day of months which have 31 days in defense of their right to freedom of assembly, as enshrined in Article 31 of the Russian Constitution. Dozens of opposition protesters are often arrested.
