Neeranam
I bought 2 packets of malboro lights, soft packet, the other night and was confused as to the right way to say it. I said malboro lai song(l) on song® song(l) Is this right? The did give the right ones, but not sure if it's correct Thai. What about "song pack"? "marboro lai song® song(l) on"? cholakarn
I've never bought any cigarettes, but I think both "song" and "pack" would be okay... At least I'd understand. ^^
thaiflyer1
"Song song " seems the right one to me. Edited November 4, 2005 by thaiflyer1
meadish_sweetball
Yes, it is correct as above, but your transcription is not too easy to read. maa-boo-rôo[F] lai[H] sawng[M] awn[L] sawng[R] sawng[M] You could possibly lose the first "sawng" and just say " maa-boo-rôo[F] lai[H] awn[L] sawng[R] sawng[M]" I agree with Snowie that 'pack' can be used as well. It shows the tone of the word preceding ie R =rising tone......etc. Edited November 4, 2005 by thaiflyer1
meadish_sweetball
R = Rising tone (represented by a reversed ^ in AUA, Haas, but I dont have it on my keyboard... I guess most of us dont.) F = Falling tone (represented by ^ in AUA, Haas [i accidentally added the ^ on oo (which is a long 'oh' like sound โ, not 'oo' as in room or boom) M = Mid tone (represented by absence of tone mark in AUA, Haas) L = Low tone (represented by ` in AUA, Haas) H = High tone (represented by ´ in AUA, Haas)

AlexLah
I have problems when buying siggaretts. OK, I want to have 2 Marlboro red and two Menthol (green) The red in soft pack the green in Hard pack. So what I try is first ask for 2 MB green (Ao MB kiauw keng, song khrap) Loh koh MB Deang song khrap) so I always end up with pointing to the right pack and indicating with my fingers I need two of each. How to say that right? KR, Alex
meadish_sweetball
Hi Alex. It is difficult to say what is wrong since we cannot hear you speak. From what you write, it seems you have the word order correct anyway. You are missing the classifier for 'pack' which is 'sawng[M]' - the same pronuciation as 'sawng[R]' = two but with a rising tone. This should not be a big problem though, as leaving the classifier out is an acceptable abbreviation Thais make themselves in everday speech. then there is แล้วก็ which you transcribe as 'loh koh'. Maybe if you tried to say 'lae-oh[H] gaw[FS]'... I hope my transcription comes through ok so you understand what I mean. So essentially, try to add the classifier 'sawng[M]' after the number, and try to speak slower and emphasize the tones. This should hopefully do the trick.
