I buy duck ready cooked, I enjoy it.....I also like the duck breast in restaurants......my wife will not eat it, says ducks eat dirt and eating duck can make you sick.....I do not ask for further explanation.....nor try to alter her judgement............I just enjoy the duck......

Thais eat both - my Mrs likes duck but says she doesn't like the thought of eating goose. She also would not eat turkey at Christmas either (chicken is fine) just the thought.

Ask a Thai about eating rabbit! Most think you are mad - eating pets - though last year a family friend's daughters had both of their pet rabbit eaten by Thai neighbours when they escaped in two separate incidents a few weeks apart! (not a poor area either).

Seriously the Chinese Thais eat heaps of duck ,every day. More so , on special celebratory occasions. Thais Thai don't ,mainly, because it was never available, nor grown by them. That is changing now , But they not so good at cooking it. If you would like to eat Dick, whoops ,sorry Duck ,Go to Yaowarat Road. In Chinatown. Many restaurants serve it. Not so much outside of Chinese Thai areas .

^ notice that here (Chanthaburi) with a high population of Chinese and Vietnamese descent, duck is more common here 'on the menu' than other places we've been in Thailand.

Conducted a poll of the Thai population in this household, and the answer is no, she says eating duck would be like eating rat, and we simply cant have that!

Duck eggs are 'out' too.

Whoophee dooooooo. Don't eat RAT? Isarn people LOVE rat , think it is better than chicken. But the rats they eat here are =yes , they aRE vegetarian rats, they only eat Paddy, so they are dead set clean.Totally free of any disease known to humankind. Snakes are much devoured. if big enough.Think about this- A protein short people- which they undeniably were, adopted a system ,Called "if it moves, it eat it" What would you say?

^ well I did say my poll only involved one person!

Her family only eat chicken, fish/prawns, no beef etc, no alcohol/tea/coffee, no cigarettes - no specific reason, they just don't, personal choice.

They may all live long and healthy lives.

Her b-in-law cooks up snakes caught on the farm, I tried it but it was more chili than snake, more than I cope could with.

I enjoy duck eggs for omlettes, and the occasional boiled egg, but yes nobody else in the household eats them

I tried rat a couple of times, more for bravado than anything else, I'll be quite pleased not to see it on the menu again....and again nobody in the immediate family would eat rat

I think you will find it's a cost thing. My G/L had never eaten duck, her family just couldn't afford it. I got some duck breast's cooked some up and she tried it, now I have hide it in the bottom of the freezer or it's gone. When her family paid a visit I told her to cook some up, did they enjoy it well they asked for it again the next night. Thank Buddha they only come to see us once every three year's.

Historically it was far better for Thai people to keep their ducks for the steady stream of eggs they supplied, rather than kiil them for meat. Go back 150 years and even eating chicken was a bit of a rarity.

Things changed, partly because of increasing affluence, but more from the mass immigration of Chinese in the late 19th/early 20th century, bringing their culinary ways with them.

I can buy duck noodles at most of the villages going north from Chiang Mai for 200 kilometer. Duck and rice is fairly common at several places also. Goose probably harder to come by just due to there are so few in the area.

I find it hard to believe that anyone is asking if Thais eat Duck!

Khao Na Pet, Kwei Tieow Pet - available in almost any street Foodstall area, even that pathetic but, for some reason, incredibly popular “Restaurant” MK Suki has Roast Duck as a regular and oft-ordered Dish.

Goose is unfortunately now much harder to find – I used to go to a wonderful small shop near Siphaya Ferry Landing (years ago, when I worked in that area) which served a fantastic “Harn Palo”; long gone now and I cannot find a replacement.

By the way Duck has been “farmed” in Thailand for many years, I well remember – some 30 years ago – driving up-country and regularly seeing men herding flocks of 200+ Ducks to forage in ricefields – sadly I never see that these days, it’s all Factory Farmed now I imagine.

Just an addition.

To those of a more adventurous mind ...... try an Omelette with Duck eggs rather than Chicken - whatever style of Omelette you prefer, just substitute Duck eggs for Chicken.

You don't even need to venture into the wilds of your local "Talad Sot" - in Bangkok at least - places such as Villa in Paradise Park now sell Duck eggs.

Much richer, far more "texture" (sorry, I've obviously been reading the Sunday Times Food sections too much recently!).

But seriously, just try it.

Of my relatives and the shirt-tail relatives, the Chinese-Thai will consume duck on a regular basis [sukhothai]

The Surin Khmer clan rarely take duck, though Mrs. zzaa09 can produce one of the most lovely of what is known to be Peking Duck.

We have four geese on the property - not for consumption.

Our [Khmer-Chinese] neighbors have at least a hundred head of ducks that are allowed to roam....and sometimes taken by others.

Duck is easy to find in the local markets in Bangkok, and I expect other parts of Thailand too, especially in areas where there is a good porportion of Thai/Chinese residents.

Goose is more difficult to find, but I guess it is still possible. I have seen frozen Goose legs sold in some of the stores that carry food for European/farangs. I think I once saw frozen Goose legs in Villa market, but I'm not sure about that. My Thai wife thought it was Duck and asked where they got Ducks with such big legs, but wasn't interested when she found out is was Goose not Duck.

I love Duck, and my wife likes it too, so the Duck-Rice wrapped in waxed paper you can get at local markets here in Bangkok is a common meal in our house.

One of the problems with Duck and also Goose here in Thailand is that they will eat worms, slugs, and snails they find. Due to the warm weather and the sometimes less than pure water Ducks and Geese can become infected with diseases carried... particularly by snails... but other worms and slugs also carry similar parasites. In particular, Ducks and Geese can get Liver flukes from that food. So you need to be very careful to cook Duck or Goose throughly to hopefully kill all those flukes. And eating Duck Liver (which I love) adds another danger on top of the pile. But I eat it anyway.

That information has been spread around Thailand by public health campaigns, and some Thais simply absobed that information as "Ducks are dirty, and you shouldn't eat their meat". That's why Duck has a bad reputation among some Thais.

I live in a large rice growing area, and after the rice has been cut the fields are slightly flooded, then they bring and unload many hundreds of ducks for a few days to eat the water snails that are in the fields. Many eggs are collected and sold buy the owner, some ducks die and are sold to and eaten by the locals and there are a number that disappear in the night!!! whistling.gif That's all done before they start wet ploughing again.
