BANGKOK: -- A female foreign artist, Elizabeth Briel, reported on twitter on Friday that she and her husband had acid sprayed at their faces at the Asoke skytrain station last night.

She said the acid was directed at them from the stairway leading to the station near Robinson shopping mall.

Mrs Briel said her husband's eyes were damaged but would be okay, while she has a burnt scalp.

They were treated at Bumrungrad hospital.

The hospital said this is the third case they have seen lately.

This is based on one post from someone's Twitter page, and it is news? Should it not be a little more substantiated than this to be put on the Bangkok Post web site?

It has scare-value. The media, after all, profit from catching the attention of the public

The only criteria for "newsworthy events" is that they generate more foaming at the mouth by the Thai Bashers, Police Bashers and Little-Old-Ladies-of-Fair-Complexions-Contingent.

If after reading an article you can grunt:" ummm Thai bad, farang good," then it's passed the editorial scrutiny hurdle.

3 tweets, none of them seem to have an agenda, for once in your lives people, accept that everything is not rosy in Thailand and things do happen, no need to be politically correct and say it also happens to Thais when there is no proof of this, in this instance it has happened to two westerners so lets just accept that it has happened to 2 westerners without assuming that it also happened to thais.

the tweets are

Another case of TIT where anything can happen and very often does.

It confounds me why tourists even want to visit the realm.

If it is the staircase at robinsons then it is a little away from the bts, at first I thought the stairwell near terminal 21 where the new construction is and it could be accidental, if nobody has walked past there I suggest you try, its a complete hazard. But if it is the staircase near Robinsons (the westin hotel) then I guess its intended and not accidental.

Where they robbed? Or is it someone with an apparent hate of foreigners!!

Sounds like a sicko. Probably attacks on Thais as well but its not being reported.

Fair comment, but it would be useful if The Nation followed up on the purported other cases

at B'grad. If only to assuage concerns, or, ascertain if there really is a threat to farangs that needs

attention before further incidents occur with apparent impunity from BiB.

This doesn't sound at all like they know it was intentional. Some liquid fell upon them from a height, causing a little damage. Construction, accident, could be anything. Acid attacks usually leave horrific scars on the face.

this was my thought depending on the staircase, there isnt enough info as to whether they saw someone squirt it or whether they have just had accidental contact

Apperently the hospital confirms there have been several attacks.

According to the same persons tweet. Nothing from the hospital itself though.

Reporting tweets as news is going to get Thaivisa into trouble sooner or later. Someone will set up a twitter account, tweet some cr@p and it will make it onto this site without any verification whatsoever.

It is well past the time that the Police got serious and cleaned up the street gangs of kids hanging around and making trouble at the Asoke intersection. They know who they are and are allowed to continue to try to extort money from taxi passengers and other motorists.

It is quite easy to see them day or night. They sit under the sky train in the center of the road sniffing glue from plastic bags, and they hide behind the Subway station on the north east corner. They have been there for more than 15 years. At night they sell flowers and shoe shines in Soi Cowboy. They are an organized gang of human traffickers and it is well past time to eliminate them, as they are an eyesore to the whole area known as the Central Business District, and now Acid Attacks on passers by to top it off. Is this the type of P.R that will double tourist arrivals next year? I think not.

Let's put some pressure on Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung and his new police chief to roll some heads in the area between Soi 4 and Asoke. Frankly it is disgraceful. Illegal drugs being sold openly on tables on the sidewalk. Last week I saw three tourist police sitting next to a table full of Viagra and sex toys 100 meters east of Robinson's department store. It may have been their table as there was no one else around.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung should put on a hat and glasses and walk alone from Soi 4 to Asoke at about 8:00 pm any day of the week and even he would be shocked at what he would see.

This whole area needs a major cleanup. How about

Please tell us from what great fount of wisdom you pulled this opinion? Or did I mistake the word 'fount' for cloaca?

And I might add that this story doesn't imply Thais are bad and farang are good. It's a story based on a first person account. No agenda.

Even if the perpetrator turns out to be Thai, again, there would be no implication that Thais are bad. This kind of stuff happens all the time back in the west, so the argument is hollow.

Most of my close friends are Thai. I find them the most generous, gracious and kind people with no bias against foreigners. I guess you don't mix with the same class of Thais that I do. How many close Thai friends do you have?

Yes I agree you will certainly find this when you hang out in bars on Nana handing money to the girls, they will all love you long time....:whistling:

A few years ago a Thai man was arrested at MBK for sticking syringes into people and injecting what he claimed was HIV infected blood into them. He turned out not to be HIV positive himself and the blood sample he was arrested with was sero-negative but still a horrible thing to do and who knows what else might be in the blood. I hope this is not the start of a round of copy cat attacks.
