meatballs
Two falangs giving back jet-skis around 4pm near royal garden, very friendly operators and no scam at all. They left laughing and very satisfied. I remember renting some jet skis a number of years ago. No scam at all. Even gave me my money back since I only rented half the time. Seems the scam is not directed at everybody or only some operaters are doing it.

Not too sure how the law works but why would it be necessary for the tourists to press charges in this case. If they have been taken to the police station and had their money returned surely this admission of guilt at the police station ought to be sufficient for the police to press charges themselves............if they wanted to!

StealthEnergiser
Do you ever see any groups of Russians get scammed? Seen a group get attacked opposite mikes shoppping mall , the thugs threw everything possible including long neck beer bottels , coconuts rocks . they chased them all the way down the beach the tourists were very scared it is painfull to watch but what can you do. Many times police are on the scene and take no notice of the thugs threatening tourist with umbrella stakes or anything else they can get there hands on. The police also may have ownership on some the jet skis and look just as corrupt as the gangs.

marinediscoking
Last week there was a group of police going down the beach inspecting the jet skis in the afternoon. A day or two after I over heard the Mikes group talking with a couple of indians in thai about the problem of them having to give back the extortion money, i didn't realize exactly what they were talking about until i read the news article. I have not seen a scam for about 10 days now, but this also maybe because of how bad the weather has been lately. The amount of jet skis being rented is way down but I think is also because of weather. Also the gang at Mikes is only bringing out about 1/2 of the amount of skis to rent which was probably ordered by the officials, they were anchoring about 20 skies in water there before. StealthEnergiser
Suspect Cop Involved In Jet Ski Scam Of Iranians Two Iranian tourists notified police that they were threatened into paying 13,000 baht for minor damage to Jet Skis they had rented. A man claiming to be a police officer had acted as a translator during the dispute. But the Iranians now believe the man was not a policeman, but part of the scam to rip them off. PATTAYA – November 24, 2012 [PDN]: at 1:10 a.m., two Iranian tourists reported to police that they were threatened by Jet Ski owners after causing minor damage to the Jet Skis they had rented. The tourists were identified as Mr. Alireza Tajikkhaveh, 24 years old, and Mr. Omidreza Jahangard, 30 years old. They told police that earlier in the evening, they had rented Jet Skis to ride along the sea shore near Mike department store on Beach Road. However, while riding the Jet Skis, they got into a minor collision. http://www.pattayadailynews.com/en/2012/11/25/suspect-cop-involved-in-jet-ski-scam-of-iranians/

The nasty women in the grey shirt always yells and threatens so loud it is easily heard on beach rd. StealthEnergiser
Top Five Travel Scams, according to Travel Insurance Direct: 1. JET SKI DAMAGE - Phuket This particular scam happens in many beachside destinations; however the scam rate is particularly high in Phuket, Thailand. The scam: Travellers rent a jet ski from the beach. When it’s return the owners claim that it’s been damaged and present a hefty repair bill. If the traveler refuses to pay, some of the rental bloke's large friends come to "convince" and have been known to march the victim to the nearest ATM. In some instances, the police have been called in to assist – and do negotiate a better price - but video evidence suggests the police are in on the scam too. Best defence: Don’t hire a jet ski in Phuket. If tourists stop renting, they’ll soon go out of business, or look for another lucrative scam. Note: Some travellers have tried to beat this scam by photographing the Jet Ski before they head out onto the water – but the crooks have begun to hide the damage with water-based paint, which washes off. http://au.totaltravel.yahoo.com/news-opinions/news/a/-/15540406/top-five-travel-scams-according-to-travel-insurance-direct/

gmac
so much for the new regulations - aren't they all supposed to be insured now ? I doubt any ligit insurance company would want too. a legitimate insurance company wouldnt be able to afford to As the actual cost of repair in each "accident" or other "damage" is probably only about 100 Baht for a bit a water soluble glue or paint I don't think the insurance companies would really be that much out of pocket! The only pre-requisite being that they use their own assessors and repairers to deal with the alleged damage and not accept the word of the jet-ski cowboys.
