Tul: Names against Thaksin’s amnesty to be collected until 15 Oct

BANGKOK, 24 September 2011 (NNT) – Coordinator of the Alliance of Patriots MD Tul Sitthisomwong has revealed that the collection of signatures opposing amnesty for ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra is progressing well and will continue until 15 October.

MD Tul yesterday led a group of supporters of the multi-color group to stage a mini-demonstration at the Victory Monument, where desks were also set up to collect names of people who disagreed with the amnesty bid for Mr Thaksin. The coordinator disclosed that more than 10,000 signatures had been obtained thus far and the collection process would be carried on in different parts of Bangkok until 15 October.

During the gathering, speeches were made on stage while Ms Yingluck Shinawatra’s performance as Prime Minister was heavily criticized. Nonetheless, the overall atmosphere was peaceful under tight security by police. Traffic was also open as usual.

But wasn't Tul one of the ones that came out against a national referendum on the subject some months ago?

Even if he managed to get a similar number of people as the pro-amnesty faction, then each side would just continue to collect more names. Therefore, it becomes a national referendum as suggested by Yingluck in her pre-election speaches.

Given the result of the general election, I can guess which side would win. Therefore Tul going ahead with his plan will only help Thaksin's plan.

Adherence to the law and court verdicts is generally not something one takes a vote on for individual offences. That's what the appelate process is for. You know, one of those other pillars of democracy.

A lot of pro-red shirt posters were saying around election time that some people that voted for PTP didn't necessarily support Thaksin, and you would assume that most people that didn't vote PTP don't support Thaksin either.

So, with the PTP only getting 48% of the vote in the election, and some of those not supporting Thaksin, your guess could be wrong.
