Repeat coup possible: Prasong

A repeat of the 2006 coup is a possiblity if the government is bent on flexing its power to rescuing just one fugitive, Thaksin Shinawatra instead of serving the public, former charter writer Prasong Soonsiri said on Tuesday.

“I want to remind those determined to serving one man instead of the country that history might repeat itself and the coup will happen once again,” he said.

Prasong said the legal scholars, known as the Nitirat Group, attacked the power seizure with an ulterior motive to help Thaksin elude his conviction and punishment.

The Yingluck Shinawatra government and certain academics were working in concerted efforts to achieve the same goal – to free Thaksin from his legal wrangling, he said.

“The coup happened for a reason and the academics should examined what Thaksin had done to trigger the power seizure,” he said.

He said the government would face a massive opposition by the people if it insisted on granting pardon for Thaksin.

“I see no possibility for Thaksin to return,” he said.

Train service disrupted in Phichit by flooding

A Bangkok-bound sprinter train stopped its journey in Phichit Tuesday due to flooding with its passengers being transferred to buses instead.

Train driver, which brought his passengers out of Chiang Mai, decided to cancel the trip after finding that railway in Phichit’s Mueang district was submerged under floodwater that was more than 25 centimetres deep.

Over 500 passengers had to switch to buses instead.

Purchase of six used submarines approved: Yingluck

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the naval proposal to buy six U-206 submarines, worth Bt6.9 billion, from Germany, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said.

“The naval procurement project has been approved,” she said.

The approval came as the last minute before the deal would expire on September 30.

The six submarines would be decommissioned by the German Navy. Four would be refurbished before the deployment in the Gulf of Thailand and two are slated for spare parts.

Labor Ministry to Create Jobs for Flood Victims

The Labor Ministry plans to help flood victims nationwide with post-flood reconstruction plans to help create jobs and generate income.

Labor Minister Phadermchai Sasomsap said Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has urged all Pheu Thai MPs and ministers to do their best to help people affected by the flood crisis.

MPs have been asked to visit their constituencies that are reeling under the effects of the ongoing floods.

The labor minister added that his ministry has been planing to provide extra help by creating jobs for local residents.

To facilitate the post-flood reconstruction and repair efforts, the ministry will recruit local residents to help repair buildings, houses and other facilities that were damaged by floods.

The ministry hopes the project will help create jobs and extra income for the flood-affected residents.
