Actually, Suharto attempted to do just the same in Indonesia, he somehow thought by diluting the local populations with "true" Javanese it would make the population easier to control.

When the Suharto government collapsed many of those relocated Javanese paid for his ideas with their lives. The Dayaks were probably the most visibly unhappy with their lot and made sure of a mass exodus with a few well-placed headless Javanese bodies in the road. (Dayaks are ex(?) headhunters).

Somehow, I suspect any such foolish idea as this would result in a similar bloodbath.

And just as an FYI, most Southern Muslims revere the Thai King and Queen deeply. I wouldn't bring that bit of foolishness up again if I were you. They are highly loved and respected everywhere they go in this country.

Not exactly the same, but not terribly different. Singapore has a decided advantage having the Chinese as 75% of the population. Malaysia is has a step up as well at 25% of its population being Japanese. Thailand only has 12% or so. Singapore and Malaysia also have the Malay pribumi as their primary labor force... slightly better stock (especially when educated) than Thailand's labor stock. Also while the Teochiu Chinese are nearly as capable (second best in business acumen, but definitely first in terms of networking) as Singapore's Hokkien, Thailand is also "set back" (just a bit) by the large Hakka Chinese population (easily the junior varsity of Chinese stock... as even after 5,000+ years, one of the few dialect groups without a "home base").

Things are certainly getting there though as Butterfly stated, because the trend for last several decades has been an increase in the Hokkien population and of course joint Teochiu-Hokkien business activity.

VICE MINISTER FOR INTERIOR KOSIN KETTHONG DISMISSES RELOCATING OF NORTHEASTERNERS TO SOUTHERN PROVINCES

Vice Minister of the Interior Kosin Ketthong (โกสินทร์ เกษทอง) has denied that he offered the idea of resettling the northeastern villagers in the southernmost provinces, given the reason that the media did not report accurate news.

Today, the Vice Minister of the Interior informed the press concerning his proposal together with showing the tape of the meeting to the media. He has denied that he recommended such idea. He insisted that his actual intention was to consider the allocation of free lands to the northeasterners, in order to solve poverty and land problems.

Mr. Kosin added that he is ready to take the responsibility if any evident could prove that he raised the idea of relocating northeasterners to the three southern border provinces He said that he will not file a lawsuit against the media for the incident and that a feasibility study may be conducted regarding the allocation of lands to the Northeasterners.

This is the problem with issuing official PR news releases. The media actually BELIEVES AND PRINTS THEM.

Perhaps the Ministers would be better off thinking before issuing public statements.

I think that most everyone here is taking this thing like it was a serious suggestion. If you read between the lines on what the PM's are saying it seems that its all a big joke....why aren't you laughing?

IMO they are most entertaining...BKK Post page one is more than often a much better laugh than the funnies.

i think its a masterstroke of an idea by the thai government.

flood the southern provinces with a few hundred thousand baan nork sh1tkickers with their toothless grins , their chickens , pigs and buffalos , their shrieking shrill voiced women , their morning to night drinking and smoking , their lazing around all day doing nothing , their temptress lascivious daughters , their 300 decibel tractors and honda 50 bikes and the muslim insurgents will be fleeing to malaysia like rats down a drainpipe in the face of such an onslaught.

lets hope they dont overnight in bangkok or hua hin on the way down.
