It's Singapore's law, so if you break it, you are at their mercy. No way around it and the punishment fits the crime in Singapore no matter how you look at it.

Just because we don't like the death penalty - that certainly bears no consideration.

BritM - I have come to terms with Singapore's stance on the matter....I know the lad will die.

What I can't fathom is............. very few, apart from you- ON THIS FORUM- will comment on the family's grief. I feel so, so sorry for the boy's Mother. She brought him into the world and yet, she is denied the right to say GOOD BYE!

The lesson learnt here should be COMPASSION FOR FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS.

I think the young man in question has finally learnt this lesson in his final moments....... in this life!

I'm sure his mother will be given ample opportunity to say goodbye - least I expect.

I guess I'm little unclear is she asking to say goodbye minutes before the lad is hanged or hours before. (what's the time frame???) I could see a scenario that perhaps they might have to drag her away if say she wouldnt let go of him minutes before the deed was to be performed. (certainly not good for all concerned - hysterical mum)

IF a contact visit is permitted it'll be tonight. A contact visit would be against the prison rules.

Doc does this only apply with death sentences exclusively or is there a no visitor policy in effect for anyone in the clink?

He said he would miss the A$300 (£129) fee that he received for each hanging. According to The Australian, however, he had been attempting to retire for years but had been prevented by the lack of anyone willing to take over his duties. “In a way I’m happy,” he said.

So now, the actions of this drug smuggling low life, has led to the identity of the Hangman being exposed, as well as putting him on the scrap heap.

Sharan Burrow. president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, said that trade sanctions could be imposed against Singapore: “We would stand ready to take action if the nation decided to up the ante.”

And the trouble he has caused could lead to sanctions. I wonder if Aus would be thinking of doing this if it had been in Saudi Arabia, instead of Singapore where he was caught?

Could you imagine the dialogue:-

Australia:- right then Saudi, if you behead our drug smuggling citizen, we don't want any more of your Oil

Saudi:- No problem, right then rest of the world, who wants some more Oil we've got some going spare :o

Edit// for Britmaveric :D

Mr BJ... I thought you were more intelligent then this. Nobodies actions lead to others' decisions unless politically affirmed. The problem is that most aren't politically aware.

Mr Hangman spoke to the press on his own behalf. The potential sanctions imposed are from people who do not believe in the death penalty no matter what the crime. Think about it!

:D

The point i was trying to make Khall (albeit unsuccessfully :D ) was the idiotic actions of this guy have caused a ripple affect, that brings other people into the scene and has an affect on them also (like his family). If this guy hadn't tried to smuggle drugs in the first place, this conversation wouldn't even be happening.

The lesson to others is, OK run the risk of drug smuggling (if you are that stupid) but at least have the common sense, to not transit through countries with the death penalty, for such an offense.

Stupid dumb <deleted>............... how could he do this to himself? How could he do this to his Mother who risked her life and limb to bring him into a better world? It breaks my heart, as so many others!!! May his soul rest peacefully.

Good Bye Nguyen Tuong Van. :o

It's notable that (according to the Times) Singapore had dismissed the hangman only a week before the execution is due. I wonder if this is deliberate so they can delay the execution? I'm not sure what good it would do them because they have to execute him eventually or be seen as bowing to pressure from the Australian government.

He is handling it well......... apparently! ( he says he is ready now, apparently!) My God, how could anybody be ready?

Decision today whether mother can hug condemned son

01.12.05 9.30am

SINGAPORE - The mother of condemned Australian drug trafficker Nguyen Tuong Van will find out today whether she will be allowed to hug her son one last time before he dies.

A decision on whether prison authorities will allow an exceptional contact visit for Kim Nguyen is expected before midday.

It is understood the decision is being made at a very senior level at Singapore's Home Affairs Department.

The visit will the last time Kim Nguyen and Nguyen's brother Khoa see him alive.

Nguyen, who is to be hanged at Changi Prison at precisely 6am local time (11am NZT) tomorrow, will also receive his final visit this morning from his legal team, led by Lex Lasry, QC.

The 25-year-old Melbourne man is also expected to meet his second Australian lawyer Julian McMahon, and Joseph Thesiera, the Singapore lawyer who argued his case in court.

Now that the Singapore government has rejected all pleas for clemency, Nguyen appears set to be executed almost three years after he was arrested in transit at Changi Airport with almost 400 grams of heroin in December 2002.

The case for his clemency has been repeatedly championed by Canberra and the Catholic Church. The appeals have been led by Prime Minister John Howard.

But Singapore's government has turned down the requests, saying the law must be allowed to take its course and Nguyen does not deserve clemency.

Singapore has defended its capital punishment regime as the furore in Australia over Nguyen's imminent death has mounted.

The government says executing drug traffickers helps keep illegal drugs out of the South-East Asian city-state.

Hanging is mandatory for those caught with more than 15 grams of heroin.

It is also applied for murder, kidnapping and some firearms offences.

Today's visits to Nguyen which may also include his best friends Kelly Ng and Bronwyn Lew, are expected to be emotionally charged.

Kim Nguyen, who has not spoken to the media since she arrived in Singapore on November 21, has appeared increasingly strained as she visits the prison.

"In a physical sense she's lost a lot of weight and her hair's becoming quite white, and that's only been a change within a week," Ng told ABC radio yesterday.

Senior Australian politicians and Mr Lasry have made strong appeals for Kim Nguyen to be allowed to touch her son.

Visitors are separated from Nguyen by a perspex pane.

"There's just no basis on which that family shouldn't be consoled, at least with some level of physical contact with their brother and son," Lasry said yesterday after he visited Nguyen for more than an hour.

The condemned man himself appears composed, even cheerful, as he contemplates the end of his life, according to those who have seen him.

Most Singaporeans, including Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, say Nguyen should go to the gallows tomorrow for his crime.

AFAIK it only applies to those on death row. :o

Yes but you would think International police would think a bit more logicaly and work together, rather than this ignorant make an example of people attitude.

The Sing police should have contacted the OZ nitwits and they should have set up a sting.

Hundreds of couriers get through.

So what about a bit more effort in catching the real guilty ones.

What sucks here is the blinding ignorance of the Australian Police.

Wouldnt it make more sense to let him thru and follow him to the real culprits.

Its the same with the Bali Nine.

They are not stopping the inflow.

They are certainly not affecting the Money people in ASIA who are getting extremely wealthy.

They are just murdering stupid kids.

He was caught by the Singaporeans with no assistance from the AFP. Which means unless he was detected entering Australia the drug would have ended up on the streets.

Personally I dont care who catches them nor what level of dealer/smuggler they catch. They are taking a link out of a chain and perhaps stopping someone else from takin the same risks.

All cops need to show their superiors good major pinch statistics. :o No glory in an Aussie cop getting the pinch in Australia on a tip off from the Singaporean cops.

Khall don't you think he did a bit more than screwed up! :D !

He smuggled drugs in a country with the death penalty, smacks of stupidity to me!

I agree that he and more particularly his mother deserve respect in his final hours but you do go overboard with your rhethoric...... :o

I JUST received an SMS message that said :

Dear Mum Won't be home for christmas going to hang around singapore. love your son, van nguyen...

That's what it said.......... it came thru on my mobile phone just a few minutes ago,

You are pushing 'em a bit. Besides, who knows your mobile number ?  :o

Good question? It's not the first......... who is sending them??!

Agree, BM - I am against the death penalty, but he broke the law in Singapore, and is being punished in Singapore. Simple as that.

Imagine, say, a Singaporean going to Australia committing a crime and then then saying "it is not a serious crime where I come from - cut me some slack guys....".

Fat chance!

All I keep thinking is poor b@stard, poor poor b@stard. When I wake up tomorrow morning this poor sod will be dead.

As I write this his mum has half an hour of visiting time left before he is taken away. The next time she will see him he will be a corpse.

Regardless of the crime, any system that is capable of doing this is barbaric. No if's or buts in my book. There is no room for compassion in the system, no room for taking extenuating curcumstances into account. People may knock the Americans for having the death penalty, but even compared to Singapore, their system is a model of enlightened sensitivity.

His death penalty serves no purpose other than to maintain the political status quo. It happened with Ronald Ryan. It's happening again with Van. Its disgusting.

No hug, but the Singapore govt will allow the mother to hold his hand tonight through a window. A major concession they believe.

He is a young man and he ######ed up... but for the grace of MY Lord I would not condemn him to die for it!

He is a young man who was happy enough to smuggle drugs which would destroy the lives of others. For that he deserves sympathy?

As the hour looms, I have to admit that there's a fairly hollow feeling in my stomach when thinking about it. Perhaps it's because the guy is the same age as me, or perhaps it's down to the comparatively small amount he got caught with. I probably wouldn't be feeling a thing if I never got caught up in a big debate about it amongst expats and Singaporians.

The taxi driver on the way to the Changi airport (who, not suprisingly, was in full support of the death penalty for this guy) mentioned that he thought a big syndicate was using him to distract attention to another major smuggling operation going on, owing to the amount he got caught with. All hearsay, of course...

Yep, you get involved with this shit, you should know the rules, but personally being against the death penalty from the start, isn't there a better way?

At least hanging is usually pretty quick way to go. Anybody know the exact time it's going to happen?

I've been thinking about this today, obviously it is taking up alot of news columns.

Imagine if your Son or Daughter embarked on a world trip, you gave them all the advice a parent would, all the do's and don't's and then they met some arse who conned them into carrying a piece of luggage or put something in their bags when they weren't looking. They get caught !

Your child would probably be sentenced to death.

I know this guy is as guilty as sin, but there is always the problem with the death penalty in that sometimes, innocent or perhaps naive individuals face the ultimate penalty and personally I do not think that that is right.

I agree with majority of your post John. However, naivity isn't a mitigating circumstance and no excuse for breaking the law. Could you imagine, "I'm sorry your Honour, I am only 18 and didn't realise that drinking 12 pints of lager would make me too pissed to drive and i'm really sorry for killing 10 school children crossing the road"

I don't have any sympathy for him to be quite honest - family yes, him fk no. He knew what he was doing plain and simple, I'm sure he never thought he would be caught, but this is a no excuse because all criminals think this way.

this guy is no innocent pawn....he is no stranger to the drug culture...he knew what he was doing and got caught, he went in with eyes wide open took the risk and lost. He also didnt co-operate with the authorities, By doing this he may have saved his own life, all he had to do was name names. He has made every choice of his own free will knowing what the consequences are.

by the way....average hit.....1/10th of a gram ....average cost per hit $50 Aus...do the sums....not the biggest amount for sure but big enough.
