ABOUT 100 crocodiles have escaped from a farm in central Thailand, sparking new fears as the country struggles to overcome crippling floods that have left more than 250 people dead.

The crocodiles escaped when Crocodile Farm Uthai Thani was inundated with floodwater over the weekend, The Bangkok Post reported today.

Thailand's Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department is now seeking to calm fears, with Thirapat Prayoonsit, the department's deputy chief, saying most of the escaped crocodiles were young and less than three-feet (1m) long.

"Please do not panic," Thirapat said. "The crocodiles are not fierce like those living in the wild. On the contrary, they are rather scared of people."

Still, officials told The Post the department was recruiting specialist crocodile hunters to help catch the reptile escapees.

Government officials in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam say more than 500 people have died across the three countries during unusually heavy monsoon rains over the past two weeks.

More than 250 of the deaths were recorded in Thailand, while more than 200 -- including 83 children -- have died in Cambodia.

Huge efforts are now underway to stop the waters from reaching low-lying Bangkok, home to 12 million people, with prevention measures including sandbags along the Chao Phraya river, AFP reported.

A large amount of runoff water is expected to reach the city in the next few days, while high tides will make it harder for the floods to flow out to sea.

I'd say that these crocodiles are more dangerous then their wild cousins because they are used to humans and have been fed by them.

Even if this was not the case their instinct would take over making them dangerous.

I wonder why Thai officials can never tell the truth. It always have to be sugarcoated with everything will be ok.

I have been tuning into that Swamp People show on History Channel. Got the technique (gun) but I am afraid that the crocs will be all gone by the time I lose my teeth and grow a mullet.

The crocodiles are not fierce like those living in the wild

Something tells me they're mighty pissed for being held captive and ready to exact revenge.

How does that old saying go - When your up to your Rs in crocodiles, it's hard to remember you're there to drain the swamp!

Even dogs will attack when they are scared, and crocs have a much worse bite and they get around real quiet in water and they've been hunting humans longer than humans have been hunting them:. Don't let those friendly smiles fool you. One mistake is all old Mister Croc needs. post-133770-0-08347200-1318348425_thumb.

Doesn't really matter. At only two feet those crocs already have teeth I can only be jealous of ;)

what a croc (pun intended) of sh#t... they are creatures of instinct, not reason. No matter where & how they were born. Me thinks he may have said that with full TAT backing.. :whistling:

and secondly.. there aren't any true wild croc's left in Thailand - hunted to death years ago.

OK, admittedly there's a couple of escapes in Khao Yai & a fairly recent controlled attempt to re-introduce the pure Siamese back into a small part of the Kingdom. Seems like they've got a few new friends to play with now..!? (which of course would defeat the object of releasing pure Siamese, if these farm hybrids were to ever encounter & breed with them.. sigh)

i doubt there is friendly or tame or scared crocodiles anywhere ,a crocodile will eat meat when its hungry ......there is 2 crocodile farms now that have overflowed escaping crocodiles into freedom

its probably only a matter of time before somebody gets bitten or maybe eaten

next news will be ....... the snake farms have been flooded ..........

it is estimated we have just lost a few hundred poisonous deadly snakes ..........but they do not bite people like the ones in the wild.....and we are getting a professional snake catcher to come and look for them ......as soon as we can

I said it before: how can something that grows 7 meters long, has about 8 Billion sharp and pointed teeth, the bite- force of a Great White, eats meat and has a brain the size of an orange, be NOT dangerous?

Yeah, how dangerous it is to tell people not to be afraid of crocs! How irresponsible.

I must say the picture is of a particularly fine specimen, I never saw one with such vivid colours... now that would make a lovely pair of boots, no?

has a single crocodile been caught yet ? :whistling:

You will not find out as they -or many will be drying/curing ready for manufacturing. Others I say will be sent to inactive posts as punishment..............
