Suvarnabhumi will not be affected by floods

BANGKOK, 18 October 2011 (NNT)-The Airport of Thailand (AoT) says Suvarnabhumi Airport will not be affected by the deluge with the 3.5-meter- tall dyke surrounding the airport.

According to Acting AoT Director Mr. Somchai Sawasdipol, Suvarnbhumi Airport has already had an effective flood prevention plan in place and there is no need for public concerns. The water levels around the airport have been constantly monitored and the current height is now safe at 60 centimeters above the sea level.

He further added that the airport is working closely with the Department of Royal Irrigation in keeping the situation under surveillance particularly now that the northern torrent is moving towards the west of Bangkok.

The AoT has coordinated with the Department of Highways and the Department of Rural Roads in increasing the height of the 23.5 kilometer earthen dyke, which surrounds the airport, and increasing the capacity of nearby canals in Lat Krabang district in case the torrent reaches the area.

Mr. Somchai is confident that the airport will be safe from flooding. Moreover, airlines and business operators have already been made aware and instructed by the AoT to follow the emergency plan when needed.

It's great the airport won't flood, but will I be able to get there tomorrow at 5am. Would appreciate any info about the roads. I'm coming from phrom pong area.

A couple of days ago the dyke surrounding Swampy was 7 meters, now 3,5m.

The dykes around Nava Nakhon was told to be 5 meters and it got flooded.

The water levels around the airport have been constantly monitored and the current height is now safe at 60 centimeters above the sea level.

Sure, just make it a mandate that Swampy won't flood and so it shall be.

What's clear is, that any area that floods or doesn't flood is only down to chance and luck now. There's no management in evidence. If this were China, all these puu yai would be going to the wall.

- RojanaIndustrial Estate (Ayutthaya) has maintained that it has built the strongestembankment wall of 6m high ... yet this place is now under water.

- High-Tech Industrial Estate (Ayutthaya) also claims that itswalls/embankments are made of solid soil capable of stopping rushingfloods ... now this place sinks under water.

- Bang Pa-In Industrial Estate (Ayutthaya) also claims that it has protected itselfwith the strongest double layer sand bags ... now it is submerged by floodwater.

- Navanakorn Industrial Estate also claims to be secure against anyimpending flood, because it has built a 5 m high wall, yet now it, too, isunder water.

- Bangkok confidently says it has prepared for a worse scenario by making anembankment wall 50cm higher than all previous recorded flood water levels ...but could Bangkok save itself?

- Properties near SuvarnabhumiInternational Airport in Bangkok are also at risk, although the airport itselfis said to be well protected. Let us wait and see.

And now is the time when events will show whether there was any shoddy workmanship, construction shortcuts, or graft involved in deviating from the original design and materials. I know things like that, of course, never happen in Thailand and couldn't even be thought of happening at the airport.
