Ducati Monster 795

I'd hate to see how much that costs, one might get there standard seat re-padded at a local Thai shop for a fraction of the price smile.png

It's Ducati, the accessories are not cheap....if you want cheap by Kawasaki

Why not just fold up a towel and tape it to the seat, if looks aren't important to you......

On the bike....

I was trying to be constructive; there are plenty of good shops around Thailand that can make an even more comfortable seat for a fraction of that gel seat.

As for folding a towel up and sticking it to my seat......

rolleyes.gif

Foam is foam and gel is gel.......you get what you pay for and gel seats really are the mutts nuts......towels on the other hand i've no idea......i'm an aesthetics kinda guy !!!! licklips.gif

Indeed they are, hence the reason a cheaper gel seat from Thailand would be the dogs ...... :)

Plenty options for a custom seat here http://www.bananaspeedthailand.com/luimoto-seat-cover/men-s-classic/ring-test-a.html :)

Great link - just thinking that the 'zeepan' seat is not the most comfortable, it kills my arse after about 2 hours ! - BUT, its a big amount to splash out without testing it though!

The shop isn't too far from you mate and i'm sure they have a seat you could test before buying. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I bought the 796. Literally. After a 20 minute test ride I signed on the dotted line. I am expecting delivery in June.

Overall I think it is a great package at what, by Thai standards, is a very reasonable price.

I have owned a couple of Ducatis before so I was unphased by things such as the hopeless mirrors.

The salesman was trying to sell me a set of accessory mirrors at, I think he said, THB 14,000! I don't think so mate.

The bars are not quite right for me but I need more kms to work out what to change. I am relatively small at 5'8" and 60 kgs. My first impression was that the bars are two wide for me rather than too low.

I was getting some wheelspin in second gear at less than full throttle. Could have been something on the road surface but I will most likely change to Pirelli Rosso tyres, as used on the 796, when the originals are worn out. They should give more traction.

Perhaps unsurprisingly my 2009 CBR150R will shortly be posted in the classifieds.

I bought a 795 about two weeks ago and I'm really enjoying it. I don't think that 400,000 is a bad price considering the other options. I had a Ducati many years ago and always wanted another one and they had an extra one at the dealership that they had gotten in for the show so I bought that one. I've been off motorcycles the last few years I've been living in Thailand so it's good to be riding again.

the thing about seats is they dont get sore until after a couple of hours have passed

almost every bike i sit on in a showroom feels comfortable with the stock seat

hard to really know if a 18,000 thb seat is worth the money by sitting on for a seconds in the bike shop ....

guys who bought gel say its a big improvement over foam ,i have never went any distance on a gel seat so cant say

In the Jungle, I am trying to decide on the 795, 796 or just get a ER6N.

I'm sure you looked at the 795. Was it just the ABS that tipped the balance. Or was is the single swing arm and the wheels that helped?

At 658k baht, the 796 just feels overpriced for the few upgrades over the 795...but I really value ABS.

What were your thoughts?

long before i would pay 658k for that 795 i would go and get the z1000 for 590k

if i needed abs the er6n cant be beaten for 250k although its not as exciting as a z1000

or a 795

I sure don't want to pay 658k for the 796, when it really only has the single swing arm, better wheels and ABS over the 399k 795.

But at 399k, the 795 is a decent price....albeit without ABS.

For the amount of riding I will have time to do, I think the ER6N is all I need I guess...

Why do you value ABS, is your driving so bad you need to depend on ABS? if you drive too fast in the dry or wet and too close without looking ahead then you need ABS, ABS will not save you if a car etc pulls out in front of you at the last minute, it will not save you if you corner to fast and lose control!! get over ABS it is an expensive option on most bikes, 40 yrs of driving bikes and cars and I have never needed ABS, yes I drive fast when I can but always drive within my limits!!

That is one of the most outrageously ridiculous statements I have ever read, but perhaps my sarcasm detector is not tuned correctly. So you have never had another driver/rider do something totally stupid and unexpected causing you to take defensive actions? I certainly have a number of times. Had once a Thai swing across 2 lanes, no signal, no warning, put me right into some sand covered asphalt along the shoulder. ABS kept the rubber side down I have no doubt of it. Another time I had a cement truck u-turn in front of me in the rain. Again, ABS to the rescue. It is not my bad driving that caused them to do this. My friend had a similar experience on his BMW S1000RR.

There are only two kinds of people that will say they will never benefit from ABS on a motorcycle. Those that have never had to panic brake and those that don't ride motorcycles. If you have never had to panic brake, then you are the first rider I have ever met that has not had to do so.

ABS will not save you if a car etc pulls out in front of you at the last minute,

It certainly may depending on the circumstances, and certainly has many times. That is the whole point of it. True, the benefit of ABS decreases exponentially as your lateral coefficient of friction approaches 0, unlike in a car. But unless it is at ~0, ABS can still help in a turn by keeping the wheels turning.

I bought the 795. Without ABS.

I wouldn't have paid ten Baht extra for the ABS version. I am not going to elaborate on that statement because I don't want to get caught in the crossfire. I would rather spend my time and energy enjoying my new bike than arguing the case.

795 vs 796?

Single sided swing arm? If it had technical merit you would see it commonly on race bikes other than endurance. If you like the way it looks buy it. As I did with my NC30 VFR400.

Wider rear rim and better tyres? OK. You have got me there. I would like the 795 to have tyres with more grip and a wider rear rim but I am not going to pay an extra 250K to get it.

I will swap to tyres with more grip when the stock tyres wear out.

You sound like the previous poster katabeachbum who mate the statement, I slam my brakes on many times a day so I would never drive a bike without ABS, he will not be slamming his brakes on for a very long time now of course, I certainly would not pay 50,000bht extra just to have ABS when I would rather rely on my skill as a driver, 40 yrs plus driving without an accident and mostly without ABS speaks for itself don't you think!!! and yes I like to drive fast sometimes but only when the road is clear!!

ABS is a braking aid which if you take it for granted will get you into trouble!! my opinion.

And no ABS will not save you if a car/lorry/mini van etc pulls out on you at the last minute!!

Anyway some people swear by ABS other people swear it is just a waste of money!!!

Yep agree with the ABS comment. and yes I am sure it has saved many people but I am also sure it has caused many accidents due to inexperience of using ABS!!

Sorry forgot to mention yes I have had to panic brake but never on a motorbike!! I never drive big bikes in the wet!! I never drive so fast as to get myself into a situation where I might have to slam brakes on!! I drive far enough back from the car etc in front so as not to have to slam brakes on!! if I should ever have to slam brakes on it will be at a speed where ABS will have no effect!!

I do agree that ABS is a good aid and might make many people feel safer!!

Keep finding things to say, so the Cement truck that did a u turn in front of you in the rain, how fast were you going and how far from the truck were you? obviously you were going fast enough to activate ABS which in my opinion is far to fast!!!

abs on my bike is so sensitive i thought of turning it off ,it works at all speeds above 10-20km

when i drive over train tracks ,speed bumps and down ramps i can feel the judder of it controlling my wheels

i thought to disable it but i watched motorcycle reviewers professional riders ,much better than i am at braking

and none of them could brake in a distance shorter than the honda abs

its hard to argue with the test results ,it just works !

^ So now I'm confused...if you think that ABS is a "good aid" and has "saved many people" then why all this "you must be a bad rider if you put value on ABS" and "40 yrs of driving bikes and cars and I have never needed ABS" and "I never get myself into a situation where I have to panic brake" bravado stuff? So your point was just to brag about your superior riding abilities?

If you were to go back to the posts I made in '09 before I bought my 650R ABS you would see I was saying some similar things about ABS that you are. I was not sold on it. I went on about threshold braking etc etc. Although I never felt that "it has caused many accidents" as you claim. Can you qualify that statement? Or are you just going on your gut feeling. If that is just your opinion, than that is of course fine. After all, many people hold opinions that directly contradict reality. After riding daily for three+ years on dodgy, sandy Phuket roads alongside homicidal drivers, I have come to appreciate ABS. That is just my opinion. It may have saved my life once, but having said that it's still not a deal breaker for me. I would still consider buying a bike (like this Monster 795) without it. I just don't believe this claim you make that "it has caused many accidents" as you suggest. How does it cause accidents? Can you provide any evidence to support this whatsoever, or just another "feel good" observation?

And BTW, ABS is effective even at slower speeds. Most will activate when needed above about 30kph. This argument "if I should ever have to slam brakes on it will be at a speed where ABS will have no effect!!" Just doesn't hold any water. You never know what hazards might be ahead of you. You must be a really boring rider if you never go over 30kph except "when the road is clear" as the road is never clear in Thailand. It is foolish to assume that even on a road that looks clear the possibility of a soi dog, chicken, tree branch, coconut, or one eye'd one legged grandpa on his 20 year old Honda Dream (who took out my friend on the S100RR) isn't lurking just ahead. To do so is foolish. ABS might help, it might not. What is certain is it doesn't hurt.

Earlier I stated that people that have never had to panic stop a motorcycle before will not feel they can benefit from ABS. You have stated you are in that group.

In 2010, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released a study that found that motorcycle antilock braking systems (ABS) were 37 percent less likely to be involved in a fatal accident. Motorcycles equipped with ABS also have 22 percent fewer damage claims and 30 percent lower injury claims than those without ABS. The study concluded by recommending that ABS be installed on all new motorcycle models.

Source: http://www.brubinste...nt-attorney.cfm

We have little doubt that, except for true experts, operating in perfect conditions, most riders in ambient conditions will perform much better in emergency stopping with ABS

The accumulation of evidence looks like ABS does work on bikes, and that it probably saves lives.

Source: http://www.bikesafer.com/abs.html

Linking to another forum isn't allowed but in the HD and Kawa forums there are threads running about ABS. One story after another of people praising ABS after having a panic stop.

Here's an interesting twist. It seems the evidence is so overwhelming that lawyers in the states are now trying to sue manufactures of non-ABS motorcycles:

Shame you have such a kawapowerful bike but never go over 30. Seems like such a waste.

Basically I think ABS is a good thing to have on any bike, unfortunately my Z1000 came without it(would I have taken up the option of ABS if it was available, yes of course I would have as it is a braking aid, no I am not a boring driver just very very careful and always drive well ahead of myself, this has kept me safe for over 40 yrs, I have seen many videos regarding ABS and yes it is a great thing to have, for me it is either on the bike I want to buy or it's not, I have had my Suzuki skydrive125cc for 3 yrs I drive it up to 80kph sometimes, I have never once had to slam my brakes on obviously it has no ABS, I can honestly say I have never done an emergency stop on any bike I have owned so have never used ABS. out this morning 130kms covered top speed 131kph, back safely!! this is not a great speed for a bike that can do 260kph, I am not a fast driver and would rather drive between 80kph and 100kph it's more enjoyable, less tiring and safer!!

I have opinions which are right or wrong, I feel that driving a bike without ABS is not a problem depending on your driving style.

ABS is good I just don't think it is a must have thing!!

Lets make it clear that owning a big powerful bike does not mean you have to drive it to the limit, I prefer a big powerful bike for it's looks, the sound etc driving very very fast here is dangerous and not enjoyable especially on a naked bike.

You consider ABS a must have thing, horses for courses, no one is right or wrong. happy days wai.gif

A good discussion lets hope it does not descend into insults!!

I totally agree with this comment you made regarding ABS.

What is certain is it doesn't hurt.

Lets leave it at that, enjoy your bike with or without ABS.

Oh and come on Lewis Hamilton!!!!!

Anytime you feel like going out for a good drive give me a pm, and lets see if I stay under 30 kph lol

Why do you value ABS, is your driving so bad you need to depend on ABS? if you drive too fast in the dry or wet and too close without looking ahead then you need ABS

Keep finding things to say, so the Cement truck that did a u turn in front of you in the rain, how fast were you going and how far from the truck were you? obviously you were going fast enough to activate ABS which in my opinion is far to fast!!!

ABS can be activated even at very low speed if it detects a potential wheel lock-up.
