Hey, that's me! Well, we've already moved the kitchen and the living room from the ground floor to the third floor as of last week, so I'll enjoy the curry and let you know when I see the water coming down the soi (still dry as I type).

The Chaopraya river is the natural way for Bangkok to be flooded by this deluge. The chaopraya river has never been blocked. Bangkok could never escape "sharing the flood misery" with the rest of central Thailand.

But flooding Bangkok's residential and commercial areas by opening the flood gates of those canals (designed with intention to protect these areas) will have little positive effect (on the dispersion of flood waters) in the final analysis ..... but will have huge negative effect on the population

I agree 100%

What a CROCK OF ****! We live on the Chao Praya at Charan Sanit Wong Soi 70/2 (Bangplad). I have been monitoring the water levels closely as we live RIGHT NEXT TO THE WATER. At 15:48 (high tide) the water was about 2" higher than yesterday's tide @ 16:48 (when the evac order was given) the water level had dropped by 2". I know this because I am using static points on the neighbouring building to monitor it. Simple technique, I know, but effective.

Will post more if it changes.

Well done, some reality at last

Bit of a coincidence with me. Listening to a vintage music collection from the 1930s and the last played track was Paul Robeson singing, "High Water."huh.gif

Coincidence for me too ... I was listening to Big Jiew's hit rendition of "Remember the Red River Valley" . The way he's singing I think he's wearing a cowboy hat.

er...not exactly 1m is it. Since I have taken that photo the water has continued to drop with the outgoing tide. I have sat at my desk with the view of the river for 4 years and I know the tides round here very well. The river IS very swollen, but it is not overflowing the wall. Right now it is 40cm below our flood wall. I am willing to accept that our flood wall might be higher, but 30cm higher?

By what stretch of the imagination is this not a state of emergency - Thailand should be asking the rest of the world to help not pretending that it will all be alright!

I will never in a million years understand this "loss of face" thing - life is much more simple "if you are in trouble ask for help" and when you are not in trouble look for others that need help!

I really hope that something is done before any more people needlessly lose their lives - they could have evacuated areas days ago in an orderly fashion - now they are opening the way for panic. I dont think this government or PM are particularly responsible since it seems that no Thai public figures are ever prepared to admit there are problems they cant deal with!

The thai goverment asked the World Bank and UN for help last week- a massive needs assessment is underway coordinated by the bank. UN will provide relief support.

Would this include Ratchada? I need to know please thanks.

still no list of the 27 communities in THE NATION; stranger, still: BKK POST does not print a single word of what the governor obviously uttered - a case of "info. for a limited circle only"? and not valid for those who only read BKK POST?

I barely got home from Tiwanon side towards Bangkok. The road that passes Satrinon school is flooded badly and is closed. people rush in panic. Very bad traffic on the roads nearby Chao Phaya river. people are fleeing worried for their cars. latest reports that Samsen gets flooded right now in Dusit area.

That is only 13 and there must be hundreds of thousands of people living in those areas, maybe more. They seriously cant mean moving everyone in all those places can they?

It's misleading, he's just translated the districts but not the communities. For example, 6. says

Yannawa - 1 community which is Rong See

It doesn't mean the whole of Yannawa. There's 27 communities liste here in 13 districts.Give me a few minutes and I'll anglicise the community names.

Coming in a little now at the Ratchada/Prachachuen intersection where that large canal is.. I also see it coming out of the drains as i turned onto Ratcahda rd. Fingers and toes crossed :)

wait until it starts coming into your house through the bathroom drains (assuming you're in a house or you're on the ground floor). It's like the <deleted> draino monster coming to get you ! :bah:

I totally agree and WELL SAID - Phra Khanong resident here.

All week my street food vendors have been saying that there is too much panicking: the owner next door of a 40 million baht house has said I am not panicking. and is totally relaxed about the local situation here.

Personally, I blame the confusing statements from officials, ramped up by the media and then amplified by Twitter and other social media. These comments only apply to Bangkok where there are flood defences (and expensive ones at that!).

I feel really sorry for all those folks up stream and across teh country who have been largely left to fend for themselves. They are the real victims in this whole sorry mess not the urbanites of inner Bangkok

Panic, panic, panic! The flood is upon us, Bangkok will be safe, Bangkok is in grave danger, only certain areas will be affected, everybody has to brace and be on alert, nobody is going to be harmed, the end is near.... it's been going on like this for a good week or so. Meanwhile, my own (low-lying) area is bone dry. The sun came out for the first time in a long while, and it's been a pleasant, balmy day so far. I am all for 'better to be safe than sorry', but conflicting reports have only poured oil on the panic fire that seems to have engulfed many people. I am getting a little upset (not much) when I see the shelves in my neighbourhood convenience store collecting dust, because they've been emptied of instant noodles, sugar (very important to stock up on enough sugar during a flood crisis!!!) and even toilet paper by the 'lemmings'. If there is as of yet no water lapping against your front gate, chances are there won't be. By the way: I am going to prepare a pork roast this evening, complete with all the trimmings. Unlike other people, I always have enough food at home to last me for at least one week if not longer, flooding or not. It's called 'housekeeping' as opposed to 'living by the day'. I feel sorry for the countless people who really have to suffer because their places are 2 or more feet underwater. They deserve our sympathy and help. As for me, I am enjoying a lovely sunset and let's be frank: If my area hasn't been inundated by now, it's not going to happen, that much is certain. If you are in the same position as I am, my advice is: Calm down, don't listen to your panicking wife, open a bottle of beer and enjoy your Saturday evening. 'Nuff said.
