This is what happens when you arm a bunch of religous zealots and give them the wests support for a violent revolution . Does anyone believe that the rebels will change their behaviour now ? Have nato allowed an Islamic extremist organisation to gain control of Libya ? Gadaffi was killed like a dog on television . Who is next ?

I'm pleased that good ole Huckleberry Hound is still alive.

He was my favourite dog on television.

1) What is wrong with these people? I may well understand their rage, but there are limits and even a hated dictator is a human being, so let him keep his digmity.

2) If it was a war crime, it has to be brought to justice! There is a new leadership in Lybia and I think they should right away be told, that there are boundaries. The international community (whatever that means) helped them, but it will not condone violence or war crimes.

This post is just a little too bleeding-heart for me. When it comes to Ghadai, the three bold-font phrases are incompatible in any sentence. Any way you slice it. The man was a monster.

It was his kind of ilk that left that poor Ethiopian nanny with scald burns all over her body because she wouldn't spank Hannibal Gadafi's brat kid. Col. Gadafi's son and daughter-in-law were just following dad's example. And what about the irony of the name Haniibal? Although the original Hannibal was a remarkable conqueror in ancient history, I'm sure the later "Hannibal Lecter" is conjured up in the minds of most westerners when they hear that name today. When it comes to a monster image, how fitting..

i think a more proper epitaph for the Colonel (and his sons) is "Good Riddance."

I feel you...but still: he was a human being (even if the lowest)...There have to be boundaries, there has to be mercy. An eye for an eye (or an ass for...) is not really my cup of earl grey!

Just to be clear, I'm not justifying the alleged "sodomy" (thank you Jingthing for setting us straight), or any other torture. As much as I basically agree with your last statement above, at the same time I can understand the irrational rage his enemies must have felt upon seeing this monster for the first time, and juxtaposing that to the recent memory of their 20,000+ comrades who've perished in the last 7 months because of this person, leaving fatherless children and widows in their wake. It's all ugly, I grant you that much.

It looks to be the same pants he was wearing in other videos of the moments before his death. And this was done with enough force to draw blood down there.

Absolutely humiliating way to go -- torn at by a pack -- but I have little sympathy. The families from Lockerbie have lived with their pain for decades. Gaddafi's end (no not that one) was short by comparison.

This is beginning to rank up there with the degradation of Mussolini.

Ol' Gaddafi should have taken his billions and moved in with his buddy Chavez when he had the chance.

The behaviour of the rebel forces in Libya is strong reinforcement of the fears that other governments in the region hold. Everyone from Syria, to Iran to the Gulf States to Israel is paying attention. These events will serve to encourage a harsher crackdown on protestors in Iran and the Gulf States.Iin respect to Israel, it will fuel the fears of what would happen if any arab group invaded Israel. Similar events occurred in Tunisia and Egypt where mobs have run amuck. I anticipate a backlash and ratcheting up of crackdowns on dissent and protest in the region.

only remember: "if the going get's tough, the tough get's going!" it's like any physical law.. evil will finally catch up with evil, not one of the systems claiming to be a 1000 years reich, not political fiefdomism, hegemonism, facism, not communism, no "socialism", no colonialism surived time... none and capitialism and global domination through commercial globalisation has still to prove its worth, just these day's it's system found itself on the touchstone!

Not babylon, assyria, niniveh, jericho, nor the pharaos, nor the greeks or the roman empire it's all but a few ruins left which lay shattered, battered by time and other conquerers which are dust and their empires are mere pebbles, by now as well - don't worry, keep watching the show as it goes on - just keep this in mind!

That is for sure. However, my guess is that he felt that he could not live a happy life as a rich man with no power.

Yes it would seem a common thing that dictators aren't really just in it for the money. It's the power they crave.

I almost feel sorry for the tyrant. In the end, dead is dead, killed is killed but to have someone shove a stick up his butt just before is just too much. Then again, maybe he enjoys that type of thing. At least I hope so for his sake.

I guess a splinter group carried out the act not the new democratic government in waiting. ;)

You have to wonder if he rethought his choice of body guards.

Yeah I wondered about that too, he supposedly had only female body guards but it seems the ones there were all men.. I guess the women were only in times of international media and not really practical in the long run....

The Libyan women bodyguards were indeed just for show. Ghaddafi had a long history of employing foreign mercenaries for his personal protection - from East Germans to Bulgarians to Moroccans and other Sub-Saharan Africans - any nationality except Libyan, in fact. One of the reasons he managed to stay in power for so long, despite numerous assassination attempts.
